About Hayley...
Who am I?
"Good at working with a wide range of people - I work with a large group of people each week. I love meeting new people and finding solutions to problems. Getting different perspectives is so important when trying to implement change. Good listener- As a Scrum Master 80% of my job is listening. The only way I can improve the ways of working and remove blockers is by listening to my team and finding out what the problem is in order to find a solution. Compassionate / Trustworthy & Honest- I was once told I was not authoritative enough. I think to be a scrum master it is not about telling people what to do it is about supporting the team to build trust and honesty. Having a safe space where the team feel they can share any issues is the most important thing in order to be productive. Problem solver - I have loved solving problems since I was small. My Mum always said I would much rather work out how things worked than play with dolls (not that you can't do that too!). I love helping people and if I see a problem I have to try fix it which is why I love being a scrum master. Friendly - not every day is easy so being friendly to everyone is important. Often you will get more done and more people will be willing to help you if you are friendly towards them. "
What do I do?
"I love my job! I get to work with a team of great people and watch them change their ways of working and thinking too. My job is to coach the squad in agile ways of working. Facilitating the ceremonies is a key part of my role making sure the squad are prepared for each sprint. I facilitate a lot of calls and spend time coaching the new scrum masters allowing them to shadow my calls when needed. I think the best part of my job is when we deliver a key piece of software that the customer will appreciate and will benefit the company. It makes all the hard work worth it!"
How did I get here?
"I joined BT at 19 as an IT Higher apprentice. This meant I worked full time for BT as a software engineer for 3 years while completing a foundation degree paid for by BT. My first role was as a support analyst working on Linux systems and I did this for 3 years. I learnt all the basics in this role about working in technology and it helped me realise that I wanted to be a UI developer which is what I moved onto when I finished my apprentice scheme. I was fortunate that when I finished my foundation degree BT offered to pay for me to complete my Top Up degree to get my Honours degree. After 18 Months I finished that this year ending up with 1st class Honours. I have been a scrum master for over a year and is definitely my favourite role yet. The best thing about working in technology is you never know what you are going to do next!"
The life I live
"I love baking and I have two sausage dogs that I love taking for walks. They have their own Instagram account so I spend a lot of time taking photos of them!"
My typical day
"I spend the morning running my stand up which allows the team to give daily updates. I then go through my emails although I will admit sometimes that doesn't happen until 5pm it really depends on how busy the day is. I spend a lot of the day checking in with my team and mapping out the work for next sprint. I organise with my product owner the tasks for next sprint and work with the team to find solutions."
My qualifications
"A Level - ABCDigital technology solutions Degree - 1st Class Honours"
