About Millie...
Who am I?
"I am an explorer, influencer and quality controller. I relate strongly with the explorer personality type. I love finding practical solutions to problems and I believe this is the overarching reason why I chose to study Mechanical Engineering at University. I also enjoy getting stuck into projects and researching the information to get a better understanding of what I'm working on. I like to work on this alone although I find team meetings can revive thought processes and motivate better work. I was surprised by 'influencer' as a personality trait. However, looking into the definition it's nothing to do with trying to get others to follow my actions which is not something I'm keen on. I do believe in diplomacy though and trying to get the best out of all members of a team. I'm a strong believer that everyone has something to offer even when it may seem like that's not in line with the group's plan of action. Finally, quality controller is another personality trait that I believe in and try to follow. Obviously having as a sense of justice and fairness is hugely important. The other characteristics of quality controllers are a sense of curiosity and proactiveness. These are both characteristics I am conscious to maintain as I value them for general efficacy. "
What do I do?
"I am a fire engineer. I help architects with the design of safe buildings using national standards as well as thermodynamic fire modelling and risk evaluation. I write reports to back up my design decisions and provide consultation to clients. I also work on governmental advisory work to ensure fire safety is featured responsibly within the British Standards. I work on renewable power, office, hospital, military, schools and ministry of justice and many more projects in the UK and abroad. I'm constantly learning about new sectors and meeting new people. I enjoy the fact that my role is directly linked to improving people's quality of life and that gives me a feeling of purpose. I also enjoy the variety of work. As I mentioned, everyday is a school day and I've really enjoyed my time to date as a fire engineer. Given it's a niche sector salaries can be relatively high for fire engineers. However, at Mott MacDonald graduates start on the same, location dependent, salary. Our starting salary was just below £30,000pa"
How did I get here?
"I studied Mechanical Engineering with Management at the University of Edinburgh. I wanted to go into F1 when I started my degree. However, I realised that the environmental sector was one with huge scope for innovation and I felt that perhaps I didn't have the attention span to spend long periods of time working on the development of individual components in a car. The construction industry is responsible for around 40% of global energy usage and 50% of landfill waste. Therefore I wanted to be part of the industry because for engineers it's a multifaceted industry with lots of exposure to different roles. I studied fire dynamics and fire safety engineering in my masters year of university and found it pretty cool. I applied for a Mechanical Engineering role at Mott MacDonald because I was drawn to the company values and ethics as well as their international reputation. However, because I'd used so many examples from my fire engineering courses in my cover letter I ended up interviewing for a Mechanical Engineering and Fire Engineering role simultaneously. I chose Fire Engineering because it sounded interesting to me, both in terms of job role but as as a title; I liked the idea of doing something very different. I was worried that it may shoe horn me into a niche sector of engineering. So far I'm enjoying it so I don't know how that decision will play out, but I think that's the beauty of working for a large company in that I'm sure I would be given support if I ever wished to move around the company. "
The life I live
"I LOVE most activities. I run, cycle and swim in my free time (sometimes in races) - all outside and always looking to explore new spots for adventure. I also play the piano and flute in my spare time as well as knitting, keeping bees (at my parents' house) and I'm very into cooking. I'm hoping to produce a honey themed cookbook based on the apiary blog I started during the lockdown. I value my work / life balance highly. I believe if I stick to my works hours I can use my free time to get involved in volunteering and directly getting involved in charity work that I feel strongly about. "
My typical day
"Currently I start my day going through my emails and responding to queries. I am currently working on the development of Battery Energy Storage Systems across the UK, so I like to do a bit of morning research on the industry which is moving super rapidly and ever evolving. I usually have a spattering of meetings throughout the day which result in further work. "
My qualifications
"AS Level Music - BHistory - APhysics - AMaths - AA Level History - A*Physics - BMaths - ADegree: 1st Class MEng Mechanical Engineering with Management (Hons)"
