About Salma...

Who am I?

"The personality type matches me very closely. My role as an academic involves working closely with students to provide academic and pastoral support and I think I fit very well in the influencer type. I enjoy supporting my students to unlock their academic potential and aspire to do well in their career. I can be very strategic and organised, which is very useful for my job as an educator. The quality assurance also fits very well with my personality. "

What do I do?

"My job involves teaching the future generation of engineers and help students to unlock their potential. I work very closely with my students to ensure that they are equipped with knowledge and skillset to allow them to excel in their engineering career. Watching my students do well has always been very rewarding and that is the part I enjoy the most about my work. I really enjoy working in projects to help solve world problems related to sustainability. "

How did I get here?

"I am a person who stammers, so maths and engineering was the only field that I could see myself working on without being judged on how I spoke or communicated. I completed my A-Level equivalent abroad, so when I first arrived in the UK, I had to learn English and do an equivalent A-Level for one academic year to prepare for university. I then went to university to study a BEng degree for 3 years. Upon successful completion of my BEng, I received 2 awards in recognition of academic performance and was offered a PhD opportunity, which I carried out for 4 years right after my BEng graduations. I have always enjoyed working in academia and as a PhD student I worked as a teaching assistant and developed teaching experience. After completing my PhD, I was accepted at a job to cover a maternity cover before I got my current post. "

The life I live

"I enjoy playing sports and doing boxing."

My typical day

"My day-to-day work varies based on the time of the academic year. During the teaching term, I spend most of my time teaching and working closely with students to help them understand and learn about engineering. When I am not teaching, I spend time on my computer preparing my teaching notes, replying to emails, attending personal development sessions. I also spend time meeting with my students one to one, where we would talk about their academic studies as well as they future career plans and I help them through that. "

My qualifications

"BEng in Telecommunication Engineering PhD in Electronic and Computing Engineering "
