About Jess...
Who am I?
"In my current role I am responsible for writing and delivering large technical projects which involve a number of people and I also line manage a few graduates and apprentices. I'd say overall this matches my job role and the direction I want to go in my career. "
What do I do?
"My role involves performing safety assessments of operations at nuclear power stations. Most of the time, this is pulling facts from different topics and collecting them together but also sometimes involves performing calculations. My favourite part of my job is learning about the different topics and figuring out how we can use parts of their work in our assessments. I am also the manager for a couple graduates and apprentices which I really enjoy! "
How did I get here?
"I studied Physics at University and specialised in Nuclear Physics and its applications as my degree progressed. I completed a number of different placements and internships at University from Finance to Teaching. My favourite was when I completed a placement in the Medical Physics department at a hospital and learnt about how Nuclear Physics is used in medical scanners and treatment. I then took a module on nuclear reactor technology in my final year and found it really interesting. I decided to apply for graduate schemes in the nuclear industry and started working at EDF in September 2017 after graduating. I spent a year on the graduate scheme on rotations around the business and have worked in the central support office since. "
The life I live
"In my spare time I run a Youtube channel to encourage more girls to pursue careers in STEM, volunteer with the STEM Ambassadors Scheme and volunteer as a trampoline coach at the local university. "
My typical day
"I spend most of my day working on my computer (either writing documents or coding) or in meetings where we discuss anything from high-level strategy for the team to the technical details of a problem we're solving. Sometimes I'm able to attend conferences where other technical experts discuss how things are managed at other nuclear sites and I also regularly visit the nuclear power stations to see the plant and speak to station staff. "
My qualifications
"A-levels: Physics A*, Maths A*, Chemistry A, Biology (AS-level) A.Degree: MSci Physics (2:1) University of BirminghamGraduate Scheme: EDF Science & Engineering Graduate Scheme. "
