About Mary...

Who am I?

"My Personality types are Coach, Coordinator and Trainer. I care a lot about the people who I work with so I take time to understand their needs and requests so they if I can help them, they can help me in return. Playing team sports from a young age allows me to work well with others. I believe very strongly in helping others in their personal and professional life which is where my trainer personality type comes from."

What do I do?

"I am a graduate at McLaren and I have been rotating through different parts of the industry to experience every department. I am currently in the car build and test department. What I most enjoy is being close to the car and seeing how the whole thing comes together. From starting in the 'Mock-up' phase, to building the car and seeing it race around the track."

How did I get here?

"I began my journey with the STEM program F1 in Schools when I was 14 years old. This sparked my passion for engineering and gave me the drive to apply for university to study Engineering. I got accepted into Oxford Brookes University to study Motorsport Engineering in 2014-2015. During my time there I took a year out to work in the historic motorsport industry at a company called Crosthwaite and Gardiner. I was a student design engineer where I reverse engineered bespoke components from historic race cars. I completed my university life in 2019 with a Batchelors of Engineering with Honours.Throughout my degree for 4 years I was involved with the top UK Formula Student team Oxford Brookes Racing. There I was the Powertrain and Engine section leader and then Chief Mechanic in my final year. Being a part of this team were the best years of my life. After graduation I began my working life with McLaren Formula One team as a graduate Engineer."

The life I live

"In my spare time I enjoy playing hockey for my local team Woking HC. Playing hockey throughout my life has helped in the working environment as I am able to work and communicate easier together to achieve one shared goal."

My typical day

"Day to day I work closely with the race car mechanics and logistics making sure that we have the right car parts sent around the world for the race weekends and that the mechanics trackside have everything they need. After the race weekend we make sure that everything comes back to the factory and gets serviced ready to go to the next race.I also have a heavy involvement with lifing of parts. This is basically seeing how long a part can last on the race car without breaking or needing a service Once the car has run on track we tell our lifing system how many kilometres the car has travelled over the weekend and it will then tell us what needs to be taken off the car and sent back to the factory for a service."
