About Mini...
Who am I?
"“For every complex problem, there is a simple solution”. It is the love of solving problems that keeps me motivated. I am excited in bringing diverse people together to deliver ground breaking solutions. This aligns with the Investigator and Leader personalities within me. For my role within Research and development, we need to look for opportunities (the glass is always half full) and not be afraid of failure. It can be frustrating and challenging at times, but the excitement of solving a problem is really satisfying. "
What do I do?
"I am passionate to deliver innovative technology for making underwater operations safer. As a Research & Development project manager, I lead innovation and development of new products with JFD. We work with our customers to understand their problems and deliver solutions to improve safety of inherently risky, hazardous underwater operations. Outer Space has always captured our imagination however we are ignorant of the unexplored opportunities on our own planet – namely the oceans. It remains one of the most unexplored areas of our planet, nonetheless a huge stream of career opportunities in the subsea sector is ready to be grabbed."
How did I get here?
"As a child I really enjoyed repairing broken household items with my dad – who was also an engineer. My first hands on experience on my own was wiring in an florescent tube light in my bedroom – that’s when I learnt that wet hands don’t pair well with electricity! Working with the electrical wiring (and the desire not to get electrocuted again) fascinated me to study electrical and electronics engineering. Since then it has been an enriching journey working in a variety of roles in consumer electronics (heaters, humidifiers), contract manufacturing (mass production of electronic assemblies) and lately in defence and oil and gas industry. I belong to a middle class family in India where a lot of importance is given to working hard and giving your best to achieve academic excellence. From a young age, I realised that I didn’t want the same life as my mother. She was very good at maths but unfortunately couldn’t complete her education due to societal pressures to get married at a young age. So, after school I was keen to pursue further education and contribute to the society. Now my mother smiles happily as she manages to fulfil her aspirations through me. "
The life I live
"I live in Scotland with my husband and two boys (aged 15 and 10). The key focus in my life is the people around me. Being born and brought up in India, there was a huge cultural difference when I started working away from home. With time, I have adapted to my new country and learned new ways to communicate with people. Now, I am able to empathise with the different perspectives and understand the “whys”. As famously said by Charles Darwin “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, but the one that is most adaptable to change.”In my spare time, I enjoy reading and spending time with my friends and family. Currently, I'm learning to play the piano - a desire I’ve had since childhood. "
My typical day
"Within Research and Development at JFD, there is never a dull moment. Work typically ranges from developing business cases for new research and development opportunities (similar to pitching at dragons den for investment) to bringing the team together to deliver and launch the next product innovation to market. I work closely with the lead engineer and technical authority on the project to deliver solutions within the constraints of project management golden triangle – Cost, Scope and Time. At each decision point, we need to understand the impact on budget, schedule and scope before committing to the way forward. Thereby, delivering the best return on investment for the business. After work, I try to fit in exercise before cooking dinner with my family. Towards the end of the day, I enjoy reading a good book till the letters on the page start dancing as I fall asleep. Currently I am reading the biography of The Curies by David Brian. The work from these famous scientists is truly inspiring. "
My qualifications
"After schooling in India, I pursued undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from my home state of Kerala, India. Recently I undertook MSc in Subsea Engineering from University of Aberdeen, as a part time course, while working with JFD. I am also an associate member at Association of Project Management and an active STEM Ambassador."
