About Leonie ...

Who am I?

"My skills my life results were coach, influencer, trainer. I feel these fit really well both with my personality and the work I do. Coach - I am creative in my work and very understanding of how people learn differently. Enjoy working with a wide range of people with the aim of compassion and honesty. These skills are vital in my role as a teacher.Influencer - Important in my director of Amazelab role as required to be a leader, work on my own and as a team plus required to think outside of the box and be thorough and reliable. Trainer - In all my roles as teacher, STEAM lead, STEM Ambassador and director of amazelab I must be organised, efficient and good at thinking of new ways to to get information out to people. "

What do I do?

"The main aim of my job role is to inspire young people into a STEM based career. I enjoy teaching my favourite scientists everyday! The starting salary for a teacher is £24,373 .Our hopes and aims of Amazelab are to inspire people to discover, interact, enjoy and take STEM subjects further with the aim of them taking on STEM based careers and developing a life-long love of these subjects. With a skills shortage noted in these subject areas now is the time to engage young people to fulfil these roles to benefit everyone in the future. We do not know yet who the next Tim Peake, Rosalind Franklin or David Attenborough will be but it’s exciting to think of the discoveries that will be made in the future, both in our region and beyond. To be able to play a small part in this journey is extremely exciting and fulfilling."

How did I get here?

"As a child I was inspired by a great veterinary surgeon featured in the TV show 'All Creatures Great and Small'. This started my dream of working in the veterinary profession and embracing my great love of animals. Having worked in general practice I went on to an orthopaedic referral hospital prior to managing a canine hydrotherapy and rehabilitation centre. My role as quality assurance supervisor for the veterinary nursing award was both rewarding and demanding. I had always had a love of teaching so decided to retain as a science teacher with a chemistry specialism and I have not looked back since. Continuing in my science teacher role is something I plan on doing for many years to come. I am also the STEAM lead for my school and throughly enjoy my voluntary STEM Ambassador role. Having recently become the director of Amazelab will allow me to work on a number of projects. "

The life I live

"I really enjoy spending time with family and friends plus I love an adventure! You'll find me out walking whenever possible. Photography is a big passion of mine, I own millions of photos! Cross stitch helps me to relax and focus my mind away from work. "

My typical day

"My day often starts by checking my emails and social media accounts, making sure everything is up to date and ready to go for the day! When I am in school I will check over all of my lessons and resources for the day whether it be practical equipment or a powerpoint, I like to be organised and check everything is ready! Teaching is based around 5 periods a day plus an enrichment lesson 6 after school. Biology, chemistry and physics is on the teaching menu with a mixture of practical and theory work. Everyday is different in a school! My STEAM lead role allows me to organise opportunities for students of the school to experience putting skills learnt in school into practice via experiences and talking to a variety of people from industry. I am also responsible for STEAM Club.As part of my STEM ambassador role I may be attending a network meeting, running a training session, assisting scouts and guides achieve their science activity badge, taking part in a podcast or creating factsheets and videos to name but a few.Director of Amazelab follows a similar pattern by keeping up to date with the days' events but also creating activity packs, on line content, packing and posting activity boxes, taking bookings, accounting and monitoring the safe running of the company. "

My qualifications

"I used to work in the veterinary profession gaining post degree veterinary qualifications in hydrotherapy and rehabilitation. Having worked in a college quality assuring the veterinary nurse award going on to complete my PGCE with a chemistry specialism ranging from ages 3-18. I now work as a science teacher, STEAM lead, volunteer STEM Ambassador and director of Amazelab Amazelab is a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, maths) company with the aim of providing engaging opportunities to people via workshops, video link, activity packs, follow along factsheets, and guidance open to all from educational settings to non -school groups and everyone in between.
