About Jennifer...

Who am I?

"My job needs me to be a good listener and a problem solver which are Coach qualities. There are multiple activities going on at the same time every minute on an oil rig so you need to have your eyes open. I work with around 80 people who have different skills and knowledge to me so I need to ask for their help with some tasks and manage my time so that I am ready for each step so Manager makes sense too. Trainer was a surprise to me but helping others and being organised is a large part of my job. Although I'm an engineer and need to understand all the engineering terms the biggest part of my job is making sure everyone works well together, I'm organised and the crew is safe. "

What do I do?

" I'm the fluids specialist onboard so my responsibilities include chemical coordination and storage procedures, preparing fluids to be pumped into the well, maintaining and treating fluids while drilling and ensuring all team members know the safety considerations when handling fluids or chemicals. I also plan for the next operation and let the office know how much fluid we will need to send out on the boat. I work alongside the Drilling Engineer, Drill Crew and other drilling specialists to make sure each well is drilling safely and efficiently every time.I love working with lots of different people with varied experience and knowledge. Everything offshore is collaborative, you need to have a good understanding of what happens next and what has priority. Typical Starting Salary is £28,000 if working locally, international contracts vary."

How did I get here?

"I went to university as I was interested in working for a drinks factory which was close to my hometown but once I got to university I found out more about chemical engineering. I was excited to work internationally and live somewhere new. I got a job based in Canada working on oil rigs on land and offshore. I liked having my own truck and driving to site which was sometimes very remote. How I'm back in Scotland I work offshore in the North Sea."

The life I live

"I work on rotation which means I spend 3 weeks at work and away from home usually working 14 hours a day then I have 3 weeks off. On my 3 weeks off I can spend my time without worrying about work as there is someone else on site doing my job. I can completely relax. As I have a lot of time off I can work on other projects. I am the founder of Mentor Mindset which helps young people like you start thinking about their career options as early as possible. I am also a STEM ambassador and go into schools to talk about career advice. I love crocheting!! I make gifts for my friends who have small children - see the photos."

My typical day

"I arrive on site on a helicopter from Aberdeen Airport. My laundry is done and food is made so all I have to worry about is the job.My routine is the same everyday when I'm on site, Monday - Sunday.4pm - wake up and wash.5pm - put clothing in laundry, eat dinner in galley5.15pm - put coveralls and hardhat on, climb stairs to office5.30pm meeting with the crew who work days, make sure everything is running well and I have the operations for the next 12 hours6pm - start shift, meetings11pm - lunchmidnight - nightly reports, meetings5am - prepare handover for the day shift coming on6am - walk down to galley for breakfast, pick up laundry7am - watch some Netflix then sleep. My tasks for each day depends on what the drilling department are doing. I could be receiving containers of chemicals which I need to check and organise or treating fluids with chemicals if I'm not happy with how it is. I need to plan the next tasks and let the office know what chemicals we will need. I have meetings with the mechanic if some equipment isn't working correctly, I work out hoe much fluid I'll need and where I'm going to put it."

My qualifications

"Highers and Advanced Highers:Advanced Maths - CAdvanced Chemistry - CHigher Physics - CHigher Biology - BHigher Administration - AHigher Music - AWhen I finished school I went to Heriot Watt University to gain my Bachelors of Chemical Engineering. I got 2:2.My job requires lots of safety training and specialist training to allow me to fly offshore. If you are interested there are videos on YouTube about the helicopter training."
