About Maggie...

Who am I?

"Communication is very important to me as English has not always been been my first language, I know how it feels to not be understood. I was also always the quiet one in school because I am softly spoken and that discouraged me from speaking up because I always had to repeat myself. However, as I have gotten older and have gained experience, I am no longer afraid to speak up or to initiate conversations and I try to encourage other people to provide their input where I can. "

What do I do?

"My main role is reporting, bringing data to life and ensuring information can be used to drive insights. What I enjoy the most out of my job is the amount of problem solving it entails which means working on my own and with others. People may not realise that within Technology related occupations you do actually speak to people outside of the Tech team, because you are providing a service for users and that requires understanding what they need. And when you build a product to life that the users had envisioned, it is very satisfying."

How did I get here?

"I did not get into Technology via the traditional route as I did not study Computer Science or Engineering of any sort. When I first went to university after school, I had studied Medicine but that did not work out. I ended up working for a couple of years before I felt ready to study again. At that time, I had contemplated either working as a counsellor or a type of therapist. So my first option was to study counselling; I did a course in counselling but I realised that was not for me so I went to university and studied Psychology. When I finished my degree and MSc, there were not a lot of jobs directly related to my degree. However there were a lot of data analytics roles. I was fortunate enough to have a got a place with Assured Skills Programme with a big company and I learnt and built up my skills within this area."

The life I live

"I love to read and have also started to paint and draw. However, what I love the most is aerial fitness; polercise and aerial hoop. The aerial community is incredibly supportive and encouraging. That along with the exercise has given me so much confidence because I have discovered my own strength and what my body is capable of. Like a lot of people, I have always had body image issues, but this form of fitness has taught me my body is only for me and I do not have to have it in a certain way to please others. "

My typical day

"My day to day role involves various parts of the reporting process, gathering requirements which may involve speaking to users in the business. I would also be in touch with colleagues in my team who would provide me with the data for the reporting and there could be times where we are trying to figure out where things go wrong, whilst these discussions may be frustrating at times, it is great to work with others because they may have a different approach to you. Asides from my main role, I am also involved with the BAME committee in my workplace with an aim promote diversity and ensure inclusion is part of our ethos. "

My qualifications

"A-Levels- Chemistry, Biology, Maths (A), Physics (B)BSc Psychology- (1st Class Honours)MSc Atypical Developement (Commendation)"
