About Rebecca...
Who am I?
"I am quite a focused individual and I enjoy working both on my own or in groups of people to solve problems and overcome challenges. I am also better with number than words, which lends well to the engineering work I do."
What do I do?
"I am currently working as a graduate engineer for a medical devices company, DePuy Synthes. The company designs, tests, manufactures and packages replacement implants for people with worn out or broken joints, mainly knees and hips. The graduate scheme is two years long and consists of four 6 month rotations around different departments on site. I am currently in my second rotation in the test, where we put the implants into machines and simulate walking movements that replicate movements in the body to see how the implants perform before we implant them into people! My previous rotation was in Product Management, where the workload was much more varied. In this rotation I was involved in projects helping new products to market but also ensuring our old products could continue to be sold.I enjoy the rotation aspect of this role, being able to see lots of different areas of the business means that I am constantly doing something different. I can also bring knowledge of different departments into my new rotations, helping improve processes using knowledge learned elsewhere. For graduate engineers working at DePuy in Leeds, the starting salary is £29,000."
How did I get here?
"I didn't really know much about engineering until I started sixth form. I learned about medical Physics in one of my A Level lessons and after looking into it a bit more, I found out about medical engineering. This was different to what I imagined engineering to be and inspired me to look into a career in engineering. I chose a mechanical engineering degree at a well respected university that offered modules in biomedical engineering too. During the summer holidays between my Bachelors degree and Masters I did a summer placement working at the company I am currently working at as a junior engineer. This was really helpful to get a feel for a real life engineering job before I chose that route after university and also to get to know people on site."
The life I live
"Outside of work I have recently taken up running as a hobby and am training for a half marathon later this year. I enjoy being outside in nature, taking my dog for walks and going for bike rides. "
My typical day
"In the test labs I am currently working in, my day to day work can vary quite a bit. Every morning the test team have a catch up meeting where we discuss everyone's plans for the day and check there are no clashes with equipment people are planning on using and take the time to discuss any problems that could cause delays to projects. After this, I work on my own personal projects. I usually have one big project I am working on by myself and then assist other people on other projects where I can. This means I can be flexible with what I am working on day to day. Usually this would involve setting up my tests and running simulators in the lab, as well as analysis of the data on my laptop sat at a desk. "
My qualifications
"I did Maths, Physics and Economics at A Level as well as Further Maths and Psychology at AS Level then went to study an integrated Masters of Engineering at University of Southampton with a Biomedical theme. The role I am currently in is my first graduate role since leaving University in 2019."
