About Isla...

Who am I?

"I believe influencer and manager suit me well. I am motivated in what I do, and take control when required. I am also very good at being a diplomat in certain situations. "

What do I do?

"I work at a nuclear plant site, which is used to produce electricity in Scotland. I work as a project engineer, looking at technical projects required on site from start to finish, managing the resource, budget and delivery. There are a wide range of projects that I get to be involved which improve, maintain and repair systems to help keep the site running. What I really enjoy about my job is the variety of work I get to be involved with and everyday is different and completely different to jsut working in an office. I like seeing my projects being delivered and get a sense of achievement from this and I enjoy being part of a team to work together to achieve. The starting salary for this job is £28,000 as a graduate."

How did I get here?

"From sixth form I completed maths, physics and chemistry for my A Levels. From then I did a chemical engineering degree at Newcastle University. I was inspired by my parent who was involved in engineering and was interested in this from there. I loved my degree and found it challenging and made me think about chemical process from start to finish. Engineering degree is really good if you are interested in science and maths! I think people can be put off thinking about engineering as a car mechanic but in reality it is very different. I then went on to my current job as a graduate where I am now just out of my graduate scheme with Jacobs looking for my next challenge."

The life I live

"In my spare time I play rugby, which I only got into a couple of years ago but love the team spirit of the game. I also love exploring new places and going on walks in the country side. I live in Edinburgh and love being part of the city life. "

My typical day

"In reality there is no typical day on site for me. There is lots of variety in my job. But the day would always start with a safety brief with my whole team where they would go over some safety points and all the projects which are happening in our department. I would usually then go out on site to supervise work in the field on projects that I have running. I would then spend some time getting in touch with contractors with quotation requests asking for risk assessments and planning out another project. A project that I am working on at the moment is to do with reducing corrosion on site to keep the systems running for longer. We work closely with station to make sure resource is available and we can perform this work at a specific time. "

My qualifications

"A Levels chemistry, physics, maths AS levels biology Masters in chemical engineering at Newcastle university "
