About Karen...
Who am I?
"The aspects of developer that fits my current position are flexible and practical as well as ability to work alone. The job is ever changing and we have to be able to work on different projects at the same time. We have to continually develop, not only our knowledge but the way in which we complete the job. Explorers also continually develop and learn knew things. The best fit to my role in explorers is about researching and experimenting, this is the core aspect to our job. Innovator fits well also as we have to be creative in finding solutions but cannot be closed off, thinking we already know the answer. Now that I am in management position I have to be strong willed at times to ensure the best outcome for the department is saught I have to be confident in my abilities to lead the team, and have good leadership skills to lead the team. The 3 personality types combined give a good representation of the skill sets required to complete my job. Also worth considering that different people will have different strength in each of these areas so to develop a team a mix of them all is required for the best outcome."
What do I do?
"I currently manage the daily operations of a quality control laboratory. We have to analyse raw materials into the process to ensure they are the correct grade. We then analyse samples from different stages of the manufacturing process to make sure what we are making is the right quality and that there is no loss in efficiency within the process. We also have a number of samples that must be analysed to ensure we are safe and legal to continue. If any issues are found, we have to carry out investigations and can get involved in trials and projects within production. I am also an auditor so can go into other areas of the business to check they are operating to the required standard. To allow me to carry out these audits I need to maintain my training and level of legal and company standards. This is probably the part of the job I like most as it allows me to work with different people and learn about other areas of the business"
How did I get here?
"I completed a degree after leaving school. Whilst at university I gained temporary work during barley harvests. My next role within the industry was analysis of finished product and research. I left that position to work for another company that let me gain experience in analysing the process samples, this gave me valuable production knowledge. I have a particular interest in environmental aspects, this role allowed me to gain a lot more experience in this area. I returned to university and completed an MSC in environmental analysis, this resulted in me getting to train as an environmental auditor for the company. Once trained as an auditor I was then allowed to complete additional training to give me knowledge to be part of the food safety committee.Instead of being inspired by a person I have been lucky in that I have just developed areas that I am interested in. I think if you are genuinely interested in an area, you are naturally more enthusiastic about it. "
The life I live
"I have 2 dogs that I am training in dog agility. This requires a great relationship between me and my dogs. It aids with their overall training and obedience whilst giving me an outside interest that lets me socialise with other people. I can be seen in a field trying to encourage 2 cocker spaniels to complete a course of jumps in the right order."
My typical day
"I spend the majority of my time at work on the computer or in meetings. I worked from home through Covid-19 and am now hybrid. Health and safety is a big part of the job, as is the case with any position. All chemicals have to be assessed as safe before use and the way in which we use them needs to be checked for safety as well. I assess new technologies and attend a number of meetings with personnel from within our company and external partner companies as well. We are members of a number of external bodies and have sector meetings to ensure best practice across the industry. This means we share our knowledge with our competitors.I have to have regular meetings with the department to ensure the work is being carried out and any issues have been identified and resolved. We support production so I have a lot of correspondence with production management. If out onsite we have to wear high visibility clothing to ensure we can be seen easily onsite and abide by site rules."
