About Dr Huda...

Who am I?

"My personality types definitely fit with the work that I do. I like to explore new things and being a geneticist means that I can always explore interesting questions in my field and generate new research findings. As a Muslim, I believe that God has blessed me with a strength when it comes to planning and managing things. This makes me able to plan scientific experiments and manage research projects, and it has also allowed me to hold managerial roles at every stage of my career. When I was an undergraduate, I was the student representative for my degree course, where I would be speaking at management meetings and student-staff forums at our school. When I went on to do my PhD, I became the student representative for our department. When I started my first job as a postdoctoral researcher, I was appointed as postdoctoral representative, and I now sit on the management committee of the School of Biomedical Science. I have also been a school governor for 5 years, and an executive officer at the students' union and a campaigner for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) rights since 2014."

What do I do?

"I am an interdisciplinary researcher who has worked within the fields of molecular cell biology and computational/systems biology for the last five years. My research focuses on the use of “Omics” technologies to discover diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for various human diseases.“Omics” technologies can detect all genes (genomics), mRNA (transcriptomics), proteins (proteomics) and metabolites (metabolomics) within a cell, so analysing data generated by those technologies can reveal a lot of interesting information such as the link between diabetes drugs and brain cancer!"

How did I get here?

"Not very long ago, I graduated with a BSc Honors degree in Human Genetics from the University of Nottingham in 2015. I then went on to do my PhD in Medicine then joined the University of Leeds as a research fellow in 2019."

The life I live

"I like baking new desserts and playing board games!"

My typical day

"As a geneticist, my day-to-day tasks can include planning and doing experiments in the lab, analysing data, chatting to peers about data interpretation or coordinating lab work, ordering research consumables, communicating with collaborators, organising and attending meetings, finding and attending relevant training//seminars, reading and writing research articles, peer reviewing other researchers' articles, or applying/preparing for scientific/public conference presentations and associated funding grants. Alongside my research duties, I teach, mentor and supervise undergraduate students. I have also served as a pastoral care tutor for 4 year at The University of Nottingham's halls of residence."

My qualifications

"BSc (Hons) in Human Genetics, The University of NottinghamPhD in Medicine, The University of Nottingham"
