Beth Lockhart
Civil Engineering Student at Bristol University (Student)
Even if your future seems out of reach right now, it's actually more realistic to get there than you think. You really can do whatever you want to do, and there will be many routes to get there.
About Beth...
Who am I?
"I think I am a 'developer' because I enjoy creating things and that is at the heart of any branch of engineering. I also got 'influencer' which I think really goes hand in hand with being creative - when you bring ideas to the table you naturally influence it. Lastly, investigator, which is very true because I love finding out how things work."
What do I do?
"This year I'm doing my Masters in Civil Engineering (so I technically don't have a job yet) But I really enjoy learning how to use maths and science to create structures that help and improve the lives of people that use them. I like knowing how the bridge I walk across works, and how a skyscrapers stands up. It makes a walk through a city so much more exciting when you can apply the things you've learnt to admire how they were made. "
How did I get here?
"I did A-Levels in Maths and Physics (which at the time seemed crazy)! Mostly because I found them to be the easiest subjects for me at GCSE and it seemed I was naturally good at it! I did well at A-Level, and when looking at degrees for my subject area, going to open days at universities, thought that engineering looked really cool. I got into Bristol Uni, and have really enjoyed it. I find my degree is so interesting because I am learning not just for the sake of learning anymore, but so that I can become a good engineer. Everything we are taught has a real world use that I may well use to design a bridge, dam, tunnel or skyscraper. I also did a year abroad this year that was offered as part of my course, and I'm so glad I did! I wouldn't have dreamt of doing that when I was in school but it was such an amazing year and learning curve. "
The life I live
"In an architecture class I realised I was actually not bad at drawing, and have since started drawing as its very therapeutic. I also run and love going on long walks listening to audiobooks. I rockclimb when I get the chance, and went on a year abroad this year as part of my degree (in the USA), and learnt how to ice skate! Really can't wait to get back on the ice as its so relaxing. "
My typical day
"I go to lectures throughout the day, and go to libraries to study in between them. I am part of Engineers without Borders Bristol and join socials, seminars and committee meetings."
My qualifications
"A Levels - Physics, Maths, Further MathsBachelors in Civil Engineering - Bristol University "
