About Faye ...

Who am I?

"I like to inspire people by calling them to action for a common purpose. I enjoy empowering people to go and make a difference, in a company that has a strong set of values. I use my strong communication skills to influence and persuade, because not everyone understands why it is important to create social benefits and create sustainable environments. I challenge and change the status quo because I believe we can always do better. "

What do I do?

"Our company are engineers, we build roads and railways - this is called infrastructure and people in society use them every day to go to work and visit places with their family. Infrastructure also keeps us safe - like flood defences for example. I make sure that when we engineer infrastructure, it delivers long term positive impact on diverse groups of people in society. This means finding partners and people we can collaborate with to create opportunities, and ultimately enhance the lives of people like you and me. Sometimes we support charities by volunteering, sometimes we give people jobs when they have been struggling to get one, and other times we support students in schools by bringing the curriculum to life! I get to work with a wide range of people, and every day is a different challenge. You have to be driven and passionate about making a difference, and not be easily knocked back. I have to be a good communicator and listener. It is so rewarding when you make a difference to the lives of people. The starting salary is around £25k but you can earn up to £80k in a senior leadership role. "

How did I get here?

"Well, I actually started as a receptionist with no experience or qualifications! I spent time learning about all aspects of construction and engineering including procurement, commercial, environment, and then I settled on (what was then called) CSR or Corporate Social Responsibility. Now, it is called Social Value or Social Impact. I had several inspirational managers along the way who gave me opportunities and supported me, but to be honest, it was down to a lot of hard work, commitment, and dedication. I didn't take the academic route like most of my friends, but now I am actually more senior than some of them! There isn't just one way. However, I do recommend ongoing learning and development, and gaining professional accreditations and qualifications to make sure you can be the best at your job. "

The life I live

"I love travelling, animals (especially dogs), music festivals and live gigs. I have been to at least one festival every Summer since I was 18 years old. "

My typical day

"Historically lots of travelling, events and meeting people. Nowadays I work from home and try to balance work with homeschooling a 7 and 10 year old. I attend lots of online meetings and I spend a lot of time creating guidance, training, and processes so we can do more together in a consistent way. "

My qualifications

"2 A Levels in English and French, Degree in Business Management, and ongoing work based qualifications and training. I did most of this later in life than anyone else! "
