About Rosanna...
Who am I?
"Coach - I think this personality type suits me well as I am a good listener and sometimes I'm compassionate to a fault (I cry in all the films). I like to think I am also friendly and approachable. I have always been a problem solver, trying to answer questions by involving other people and learning from them.Developer - I don't think of myself as a very creative person but I am interested in the world around me and I want to make it a better place, this is the very reason I got into the nuclear industry in the first place. I am flexible and love working with new people and different teams although I also like working through a problem myself.Quality Controller - I would like to think of myself as a trustworthy individual, this matched with my sense of justice are certainly driving forces for me getting involved in my companies initiatives to improve equality and inclusion. Looking at the other roles I would also say I have several traits from the coordinator and influencer profiles but perhaps these are areas I have had to work on a little harder."
What do I do?
"I'm a site Environment Engineer - my job is to make sure that the decommissioning site that I work on is compliant with all relevant legislation and that we are carrying out work in a way that will minimise our impact on the local environment. The location where I work is surrounded by protected sites and hosts various protected species so it's important that we carry out work in a way that does not affect them. What I enjoy most about my job is that it feels like the decisions I make matter as the consequences of the work we do can have reprucussions for decades.Outside my role as an Environment Engineer I am also an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador for my company as I believe Equality, Diversity and Inclusion are key to a happy, productive working environment where everyone can acheive their best."
How did I get here?
"I studied Chemistry at university with an Erasmus year in France where I studied nuclear materials. I found the nuclear industry interesting and was particularly keen to help shape a future that built on the important lessons from the past to develop a nuclear industry that can be regarded as sustainable and responsible. I joined the nucleargraduates scheme where I got placements at Magnox Ltd. working on decommissioning nuclear power stations, EDF where I worked at an operation power station and at the International Atomic Energy Agency where I worked with nuclear professionals from around the world to develop guidance, share best practice and support countries in their nuclear waste management and decommissioning projects. After my grad scheme I returned to work for Magnox Ltd. and worked in several teams before becoming an Environment Engineer. I was able to use my experience from other areas of the business to bring context to my role and better understand the pressures felt by site project teams. I now work providing advice to project teams to ensure environmental compliance and to help the site make sustainable decisions for the future. "
The life I live
"After several years in big cities I moved to the countryside a couple of years ago. Although I no longer have access to as many activities that I used to like doing such as lindy hop and blues dancing I now love the fact I'm a 10 minute drive from the sea and that I can walk out of my house and instantly be in the countryside. Since moving here I have become very serious about my cooking and I have secret ambitions of maybe one day being good enough to contemplate a MasterChef application..."
My typical day
"I am mainly office based. I spend my time between bigger projects such as writing reports to justify environmental permit applications and ad-hoc advice work such as producing training materials and answering project queries about up-coming work. I spend a lot of my time talking to engineers about their plans and making sure that the work that is going to happen on site has considered the environmental impacts and has the right mitigations in place. "
My qualifications
"A-levels: Biology (to AS Level), Chemistry, Maths (with mechanics), French and SpanishUniversity: MSci in Chemistry with Study in France"
