Be curious and ask why. If you find a job or area that interests you finds opportunities to have an experience first-hand so that you can decide if you really like it or not. I'm a scientist and I started by volunteer to work for a lab for few months after my Biology degree. I've never left the lab-life since!

About Roberta...

Who am I?

"My personality types are Influencer, Manager, and Quality Controller. I think the quiz got it right because I believed to be diplomatic, reliable, motivated, team oriented, open-minded and trustworthy. That is in both my personal and professional life I try to help others achieve their potential, I am generous and I always strive for the best use of my time and resources. I like to improve and learn new things so I will always seek new opportunities to become better at what I do."

What do I do?

"I am postdoctoral training fellow which is a position one can obtain after the completion of a PhD. I basically do scientific research on a daily basis and the main goal of my current job is to gain those useful skills both scientific and personal that will make me a better leader of my own research group one day! I work with both MSc and Phd students and supervise them so they can progress with their project. I do experiments in the lab where I can test and verify my theories. I study the ovary trying to understand which genes and proteins are essential for its development and fertility. "

How did I get here?

"It's all about trying and testing! After my MSc ended I tried the lab-life by volunteering to stay longer and work in the lab that hosted my for my MSc thesis work. Since then I got passionate about everything that science entails, the work in the lab, the discussions with colleagues, the coffee breaks (!), the conferences, the contact with students and the idea of passing on my knowledge and learn from the more experienced everyday! After my MSc lab experience I booked a one way ticket to London and and english course for a couple of months with the intention of applying for PhD scholarships. It was November and I had given myself a couple of months to achieve my target (looking back I could have given myself a little longer..opportunities don;t always come when you are wanting them..). I was fortunate enough to be given an offer from Imperial College for a PhD in clinical medicine which I took straight away! I spent the next four years studying preterm birth and it was one of the best time of my life so far! I had great mentors for which I will always be grateful. Which reminds me to suggest you: always seek the best supervisor you can possibly can have! This is crucial if you wan to be productive and happy with your choice!"

The life I live

"In my spare time I am a climber, I climb mountains and indoor climbing walls (far less exciting). I am also an ukulele player and an avid gardener. I have a vegetable patch in my garden where I grow my own salads, tomatoes, blueberries etc."

My typical day

"My typical day is spent at my lab bench doing experiments. When i get the time I sit at my laptop and reply emails from collaborators and have coffee with my colleagues. I read papers to keep myself updated with what other scientists are working on in my field and I have meeting with my colleagues where we discuss the progress we have made in our projects and help each other."

My qualifications

"I did most of my education (prior PhD) in Italy so I;m afraid i do not have the classical GCSE list. But I studied a broad range of subject in high school, my school was focused on scientific subjects (maths, chemistry, biology), but I have also studied French, English, Italian and Latin!"
