About Jasmine...

Who am I?

"I received the Coach, Quality Controller and Trainer personality types. I think I am more of a Quality Controller or a Trainer due to my organisation, efficiency and curiosity. These are qualities that are useful in my job because I have to work with lots of detail and make sure that I keep on top of my workload. Being curious is always good for an engineer as we solve problems, so the more knowledge, the better! Taking pride in exceeding expectations is a Coach quality that I can definitely identify with. As a woman, you are sometimes underestimated as engineering is a male-dominated industry, so I feel great when I get to show just how good my work is. "

What do I do?

"In my first year as an apprentice, I gained experience in programming, website design, test system design and fault-finding. Now, I am in the Tech Support department where I help investigate problems with existing products that we sell to customers. This can involve setting up test systems, programming test equipment, testing new components and even designing test equipment. I love this job as every day is different and I get to use a variety of skills. The starting salary for an engineering degree apprentice is between £10,000 and £20,000 in the UK. It varies depending on the company you work for so you can choose what positions you apply for based on the salary. "

How did I get here?

"During my teenage years, I had several part-time jobs and work experience placements that helped me build a strong CV. I decided to go to a UTC (University Technical College) to pursue engineering after realising that it was the best combination of maths, science and practical work. At college, I loved engineering and decided it was the career for me. I was keen on doing a degree apprenticeship because I liked the idea of having no student debt, plus my own money, and gaining a degree while being able to cement my learning in a working environment. I received support from my teachers at college and was able to secure a degree apprenticeship at Edwards Vacuum in Eastbourne. "

The life I live

"Outside of work, I love to play badminton and computer games, and spend time with friends and family. My favourite thing to do is put the radio on and dance around my flat :) "

My typical day

"My day is usually about 70% practical and 30% written work. The activities that I do at work are varied but the practical stuff I do is testing, soldering, making up wires or test rigs, and programming. The written work consists of writing up reports on the projects that I am doing, communicating with others in my company through email and Teams, and researching different topics based on my work. Every day is different and I like being able to work towards the end of a project. I set myself goals every morning and this makes it feel like I've achieved something at the end of the day when I can tick off all the things I've done. "

My qualifications

"I completed the following courses at a University Technical College: BTEC EngineeringA Level MathsA Level ArtI am currently working towards a BA in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at University of Chichester. "
