About Bethany...
Who am I?
"My personality quiz was a bit of a mix ; which I think makes sense for me! I try and be honest and ethical like a quality controller, and I'm good at details like an investigator. However, I do feel that I work better individually, and I'm not good at managing risk (I tend to be more cautious!) I'd also love it if I was seen as a good listener like the trainer - it's definitely something I'd want to aim for. "
What do I do?
"I'm a Edison Graduate Engineer, so I move roles every 8 months. My current job is a mechanical design engineer, where I help make technical drawings, fix errors on online systems, and sometimes even design items from scratch! I love the level of responsibility and number of opportunities that comes with this job; I'm always busy, but I always feel that I can ask to work on something that interests me. The starting salary of my role is £28K."
How did I get here?
"In school, I ran a programming club (with lego!) , and was part of a team that built an eco-friendly race car. Then I moved up to an all girls 6th form, and there was no IT, no computing, no engineering! I was one of 5 girls in my physics class. I was so annoyed with the lack of choices and opportunities to do what I enjoyed - and STEM based things - so it made me really persistent to find something I really wanted to do. I was lucky enough to find GE's engineering degree apprenticeship scheme, and after 5 years of getting my degree and learning how to repair aircraft engines, I moved onto the graduate scheme. "
The life I live
"It's a bit odd I suppose, but I'm currently trying to teach myself how to do nails! I'd love to be able to do acrylics and dip powders like a pro, but I still keep messing up my right hand...oops! The dream is to do some formal training, when I get the time. I also love animals - I've had Tail & Tailless (Crested Geckos), Marshall (Skink), Morty (Corn Snake), Max & Acorn (Guinea Pigs), although not all at the same time! "
My typical day
"We usually start the day with a team meeting, where we all get together and the project manager checks everyone's working to schedule, and also that no one needs any help. If I'm low on work, this is where I volunteer to pick up tasks. Most of my day-to-day tasks are CAD/computer based, and I usually work a task by myself, so unless I get stuck I work mainly on my own. I also have lectures as part of the program I'm on, so every week I'll meet up with my cohort and listen to experienced engineers explain important concepts and techniques. "
My qualifications
"A Levels : Maths, Physics, English Language. Degree: BEng Mechanical Engineering."
