About Sophie...

Who am I?

"I believe my personality types match me well and they all fit closely to the work I do, especially in an industry dominated by males. My first personality type is a Campaigner, leaving a good first impression is extremely important as it is more often than not what you are remembered by and also keeping up this impression by being organised and never late. I am extremely passionate about my work and all my interests and i use this passion to motivate others. Secondly I am an Innovator, confident in my work and ideas, but not overly and always remaining open minded to find alternative solutions. My strong-will leads me to be an influencer whilst always respecting others ideas and opinions. These qualities enable me to make an effective leader. Finally I am an Explorer, always curious, practically minded, able to think outside the box to solve the problem. My competitiveness is channeled into not always finishing first but always meeting the needs of the task to the highest possible quality. Above all and most importantly, I am resilient and this is paramount to working within an industry such as Aerospace Engineering."

What do I do?

"The work in which I undertake is very varied which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much - no 2 days are the same. I work in a global company resolving quality issues with production (possibly the area I most enjoy), I liaise with suppliers and customers, I work with some of the most advanced technology in the industry in new projects looking at future designs and build processes and work in digitalisation in bringing some aspects of the current build process in line with today's advanced software capabilities, lowering production costs and reducing the risk of mistakes being made. My starting salary was around £16,500 and the opportunities for progression are in abundance."

How did I get here?

"I have always had a love and passion for engineering, especially cars - I am a huge petrol head. I have always enjoyed maths and science more than the arts subjects and it was when standing in the garage Shrewsbury High School at the age on 14 covered in oil with my favorite teachers and the rest of my team, building a F24 electric car that I knew engineering was the career for me.I have always had a very driven mindset and won't let anything get in my way, from this point I got involved in every engineering opportunity that came my was as well as focusing hard on my academic work. My teachers have always been my inspiration with their passion and enthusiasm I shared with them for their subjects. Outside of school I had a part time job as a Managing Waitress in my local pub which enhanced my people and leadership skills and was a coach and manager for a local football club. My busy lifestyle made me quickly develop time management skills and taught me how to always keep calm under pressure, all competencies required for my job."

The life I live

"I am always doing something, completely incapable of sitting in the house watching TV for more than about 30 minutes! I am an avid follower of the World Rally Championship, spending weekends freezing and drenched in the Welsh forests watching the Wales Rally GB - hopefully one day I will build my own car and be competing rather than spectating. I have grown up on a farm and love being outdoors doing anything from fencing to looking after the sheep. I also have a passion for Clay Pigeon Shooting and other more conventional sports such as football, cricket and rounders, all of which I play regularly. On top of this I am the County Coordinator for Young Leaders within Girlguiding and am often involved in the service team for large camps as well as working towards my Mountain Leadership Qualification. I love driving and often take a 'road trip' with my camera to some beautiful Welsh countryside to find some interesting perspectives to photograph."

My typical day

"The first half hour of my day tends to involve admin, catching up on emails and prioritising the tasks for the day. After this my team has a Start of Shift meeting where the status of projects is discussed, any issues which have occurred both within projects, the wider company and the team. After the Start of Shift meeting, the day really begins however even though I have planned and prioritised the tasks it is not uncommon for an urgent issue to require solving. I often hold video conference meetings with suppliers in Spain and internal customers in the Final Assembly Line in France. Almost every day I have to complete an inspection of a wing before it moves to the next stage of the production line in order to identify any issues which it is my teams responsibility to rectify. I also spend a lot of time carrying out line checks on the wings in order to find the root cause of issues and where they occur in order to develop a suitable solution. The aim is always to have a 'Golden Wing' with no issues however in reality that is near impossible so I continuously work with my team to get as close to this goal as is possible."

My qualifications

"After taking my GCSEs I went on to studying Mathematics, Physics and Geography at A-Level and Further Mathematics AS-Level. I also hold an FA-Level 1 Football Coaching qualification, I am a trained STEM Ambassador, a Girlguiding Leader and a Community Sports Coach. The skills learned in all these extracurricular qualifications enhanced my academic qualifications in me succeeding to get this job and to thrive within it."
