About Ashley...

Who am I?

"My personality types are communicator, investigator and quality assurance. These feel about right to me as, although I enjoy working with numbers and problem-solving, I like to be able to communicate what I find out with others so that I can help to make the world a better place (however big or small the problem I'm working on might be). I also had a bit of a laugh about the quality assurance one, as I've been told before that I question different sources of information frequently... apparently I say \"that can't be right\" quite a bit!"

What do I do?

"My job is focused on understanding the potential of hydrogen to help us reach our climate change targets. Hydrogen is a zero emission fuel and could be used to heat homes and businesses of the future. It's an exciting area to work in for someone who likes to challenge how things are right now and push for a better future. My days are spent sitting at my computer working with numbers and reading/writing reports. I also attend a lot of meetings with the people that I work with and with other companies. In my job, I need to make sure that the company I work for is working well with others who are also looking at hydrogen. My job definitely keeps me on my toes, as it's very fast-paced and things are constantly changing."

How did I get here?

"I've always enjoyed a combination of numbers and words, so when I finished school, I studied Economics (maths based) and International Studies (words based, involving a lot of reading and writing). While I was studying I had a few part-time jobs at a bakery, Subway and even as a singing teacher. Part-way through university, I took some time off from studying and had my first office job which taught me a lot about how an office works and I learned some key skills that have helped me a lot in my career so far. When I finished university, I moved to the UK for a year (I'm from Australia) and loved it. The experience really opened my eyes to the big, wide world around me and also taught me how similar and different life was half-way around the world. I learned a lot about myself and also what I was really interested in.When I got back to Australia, I started working in the energy industry by accident (I didn't think my skills would be that relevant), but after a few months I realised there were opportunities for me and decided to stay. I firstly worked for an electricity distribution business for a few years which was focused on forecasting how much money the company would need over the next 5-10 years. I then moved to a gas distribution business with a similar focus, but there was starting to become much more interest in climate change and we needed to start thinking further into the future, to the next 30, 40, 50 years instead of just 5-10. So then I started to look at hydrogen and it's now led me back to the UK."

The life I live

"I love to travel and explore new places - whether it's different types of food, buildings, or just some people-watching, I find it refreshing to see how life is different across the world. I also enjoy singing and musical theatre. I've participated in a few amateur theatre productions over the past few years and while they're a big time commitment and sometimes difficult to fit in with work, I've enjoyed pushing myself in a creative way outside of work. And I enjoy a bit of baking too... although I'm not sure how good at it I am!"

My typical day

"In a typical day I would spend quite a bit of time reading and replying to emails, and also organising and participating in meetings/phone calls. Depending on the projects I'm working on, I could be reviewing data/analysis or reading/writing reports as needs be. I also need to constantly be thinking about what we need to do next to convince other people about the potential of hydrogen. To do this, I regularly do some research on what other companies are doing so that I can discuss this with my colleagues."
