Emily Jones
Global Technology Graduate at HSBC
The biggest obstacles I've ever faced were the ones placed there by me.
About Emily...
Who am I?
"My personality matches are pretty accurate- I would also say Explorer overlaps a lot with my personality traits too. They all help me with the work I do as HSBC is a huge company, there is lot's of people to work and communicate efficiently with. A really effective way to accomplish this is to ask lots of open ended questions, understand/ care about what they do in the bank and what motivates them. Curious, resilient and motivated are three traits that I regularly use and am often described as. Curiosity is important in technology as there is always more to learn/discover so if you're curious and excited to learn lot's then technology is the perfect area for this. Resilience, is an important skill to use in my role because there's always problems to overcome and lot's of challenge's so you have to be resilient and adaptable. Lastly, motivated- motivated to learn, succeed, to be disruptive in a good way.. lots of examples I could give here."
What do I do?
"I am helping to run a project within CMB Technology. This involves communicating, collaborating and organising tasks with my team. My team are based in India so it has been really great to work with international colleagues too. The project aims to improve existing tools used in CMB which will increase inefficiencies, human errors and a lot of wasted time for colleagues. As well as this I'm working with huge data sets using python coding techniques to help spot patterns, visualize trends and automate really inefficient tasks which could save hours of work. Another focus of this data analytics piece of work is to highlight really hardworking colleagues who have been addressing incident tickets reported by customers/colleagues and to create a series of success stories to highlight this hard work within technology as this is often overlooked."
How did I get here?
"I studied Mathematics and German at the University of Southampton. I focused my studies on financial mathematical and how statistical models can be used to price financial instruments . This involved some coding which made me really curious about how else code can be used. Therefore, I decided to go into technology to find out more about data science and with an aim to start working once again with mathematical finance in a real world setting. "
The life I live
"- I love yoga, swimming, netball. - I read lots of books, listen to music and love spending time with family. - I also draw/ paint art in my spare time."
My typical day
"I have lots of video conferences and meetings on my computer, I sometimes need to work on coding or replying to lot's of emails. I personally also allocate time to continue to learn new skills when I have free time with online courses. I work in Canary Wharf in London so there's lots of nice places to grab lunch too. "
