About Hannah...
Who am I?
"I think the personality types match me well and the job roles suggested match aspects of my job, for example operational researcher and aerospace engineer. Communicator: A big part of my job is the ability to confidently communicate, both through verbal explanation, but also through the effective visualisation of data into graphs which advise the customer. I have to take complex scenarios and results, and present them in such a way as to get over a clear and simple message, and I have to vary my presenting style dependent on the audience.Developer: Usually I'm looking at something that we haven't looked at before, so I have to be creative in how I go about these things. I also have to be good at working both on my own and in a team, getting to spend a lot of time doing both is something I really enjoy about my job. I enjoy getting really stuck into my work when working on my own, but also love the collaboration and bouncing ideas around aspects of working in a team. A big part of what makes me enjoy my job is constantly learning new things, both consciously through learning a new coding language for example, or sub-consciously through talking to the more experienced members of my team, and also with our intelligence partners across the world.Investigator: When given a problem to solve, I like to step back and think things through thoroughly and logically. Often this involves talking things through with others, and gaining other opinions. This way of working is important when solving non-routine and new problems."
What do I do?
"I assess the survivability of the UK's current and future air platforms, and provide advice on how to improve this. I enjoy many aspects of my job. I get a lot of satisfaction out of analysing data, which I produced, to create beautiful graphs which effectively communicate advice to our customers. Not only do I work with people across Dstl, I also work closely with my equivalents in Australia, Canada, the US and New Zealand so have had multiple fantastic opportunities to attend workshops and conferences in Australia and the US. I also have the opportunity to constantly learn new things which is important to me."
How did I get here?
"At 16 I didn't know what career path I wanted to take so chose AS levels which I both enjoyed and would open as many doors as possible later in life: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, History and French. By the end of my AS year, I’d decided to go down the maths and physics route so dropped subjects accordingly. I then completed a Masters degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Southampton which enabled me to join the 2 year Graduate Development Scheme at Dstl. This was a great experience which enabled me to see a wide range of the things Dstl are involved in, as well as complete a 6 month secondment at the Ministry of Defence Main Building in London. After the graduate scheme, I joined the team who I had most enjoyed working with."
The life I live
"I love solving problems so my favourite thing to do in my spare time is escape rooms - I've done nearly 50! I play them mainly with my partner, but also often with our friends and families too. It's always a great way to spend an hour (hopefully less!!) with lots of laughs on the way.I have two cats, Monty and Martha, who I absolutely dote on so I spend lots of time with them.My partner and I love active holidays so choose holiday destinations where there are lots of outdoor activities. My favourite so far has been going to Slovenia last year; we did a lot of hiking (particularly to the best view points of Lake Bled...google it!), rowing, zip-lining, white-water rafting, cycling...and we ate a lot of really good food. We've also been to the tennis masters in Madrid and the Motogp in San Marino, aswell as much tennis and motorsport in the UK as we can get to.One of my favourite perks of working in defence is the Services days that some theme parks put on. I've been able to go to Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and Legoland with family and friends on days where a hugely limited number of tickets are sold."
My typical day
"My days vary significantly! Some days I get to sit at my computer all day getting really stuck into my work: setting up and running simulations, analysing data and playing around with different ways to present the results. Other days are spent in long meetings, or rushing between lots of shorter ones, with colleagues, customers and technical partners. My favourite days have been spent working with our partners at workshops in Australia. Days out of the office being a STEM Ambassador are also really great."
