About Lynsey...

Who am I?

"I believe the personality types suit, however for a successful team we need a variety of personalities, to achieve a good working relationship & achieve the goals of the project. "

What do I do?

"I am currently responsible for 50% of a £17 million project, upgrade and extension of a linkspan & pontoon in Birkenhead. I am responsible for the planning & implementing of the works, managing the engineering team, recording works & supervision, along with management of commercial / cost aspects of the project. The starting salary is currently approx £28,000 for a graduate site engineer. A site engineer would begin with setting out works, using GPS & survey equipment, moving on to management of operatives & subcontractors, along with quality assurance works throughout."

How did I get here?

"I always enjoyed mathematics and technology & design in school. I knew I wanted to work outside. I began to study Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee in 2007. Each summer I sourced a work placement in construction to build up my experience, this was critical to finding a graduate job. I graduated with a Masters in Civil Engineering in 2011, beginning work for Farrans Construction. My job roles have included; site engineer on watermain rehabilitation projects, site engineer on small sewers upgrade projects, site engineer on water meter installation (Dublin), site engineer on a flood alleviation scheme, site engineer on the Northern Spire Bridge project, section engineer on Brechfa Windfarm construction project, section engineer on the construction of 2 x 8ML concrete reservoir tanks & pumping station, section engineer on the Twelve Quays berth upgrade works, pontoon & linkspan upgrade & extension.I have had many role models however not as many female as I would hope for. Now I hope we can all become role models for the future of engineering."

The life I live

"I enjoy farming & running in my spare time, working in construction there is often a lot of travel involved so when I get home I enjoy being in the countryside. The best achievement to date was the ability to be involved in the planning & construction of a footbridge in Rwanda in 2018, this project provided a life changing access route for local people in the area."

My typical day

"I start my day early, arriving to site at 07.00. I present a daily briefing to the subcontractors & operatives, usually up to 40 people, of the work planned for the day, deliveries and visits. I check my emails & head outside to get all the work started. At 10.00 we have our second breakfast and review the rest of the day. I go outside to check on works and check any measurements or queries, review any works in relation to quality & update my records. For the afternoon I spend most of my time ordering materials, planning works & updating records, along with solving any queries & problems from the morning.I then plan for the next day, review the works outside again and head home.It is critical to keep reviewing & updating programme & progress so that it is clear that things are / are not running on schedule & what additional resources would be needed to meet the programme. Everyone is involved in this process."

My qualifications

"GCSE: Mathematics A*, Additional Mathematics, Business Studies A, English, Double Award Science, Technology & design, RE B, French C.AS Level: Mathematics, Business Studies, Technology & Design, Physics, AA Level: Mathematics, Technology & Design, Physics, AI studied a university degree in Civil Engineering, Design & Management, achieveing a first class MastersI achieved Chartered Civil Engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2017."
