About Becky...

Who am I?

"I would describe myself as a bit of a chameleon, adapting and evolving constantly. I love finding out information and about how things work, then using that to be creative. I am practical and organised but can also run away with ideas at times. That mix of traits serves me well in the constantly changing creative world of game development."

What do I do?

"I'm a Computer Game Designer, working for a company called Flix Interactive who not only create their own games but also co-create with some of the best-known games studios in the UK. As a game designer, I decide on how certain aspects of the game will work, such as the combat or chat system, then I work with the artists and coders to create that vision. I enjoy the constantly evolving nature of the games industry and love seeing people playing games I have worked on."

How did I get here?

"I completed a degree in Biology then got disillusioned with lab work so decided to follow the passion I've had since I was 10 – playing computer games. I literally emailed all the games companies in the UK (which I don't recommend!) asking for vacancies and struck gold by finding out that a company called Evolution Studios were looking for QA testers. It was hard work and long hours but gradually I gained experience and knowledge. I moved on to other companies and worked my way from QA to Game Design. Some of my colleagues in similar positions have done Game Design degrees."

The life I live

"I don't have massive amounts of spare time as I'm a parent these days. I love playing computer games (of course, even at my age!), including FPS and MMORPGs. I also enjoy getting outdoors, escape rooms, board games and running. Something a lot of people don't know about me is that when I was in primary school I loved football but was told I couldn't play in the school team as it was boys only. I was really upset. So I'm working hard to ensure my daughter knows that girls can do anything they want to!"

My typical day

"A typical day would involve discussions with colleagues about an idea or design details for part of a game (e.g. how sword combat should work), perhaps documenting that. I might also be working in the game engine adding in data so that that part of the game works as we intended, then testing the game. Coming up with ideas and solutions is not a daily thing but happens fairly often. I might also be in meetings to review certain pieces of work."

My qualifications

"BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences, however the route to my role was mainly learning on the job. Game design degrees are now available so I encourage you to look into those."
