About Emilie...
Who am I?
"I think the personality types have matched with the different aspects of my personality very well, as each one identifies an area that I am interested in but also good at. Developer is very apt as it's in my job title! My current role is developing the next generation of diesel engines to go into JCB's machines, which means I have to work on improving the product and solve problems that come up along the way. I am always reading up about new technology and current engineering news, as I am interested in the world around me and want to try and improve it in any way that I can. I work within a small team, but I am responsible for managing my workload on a daily basis and have to be confident making decisions by myself.Influencer is an interesting one as I have recently started exploring this area of my work a bit more. I do a lot of volunteering as a STEM ambassador and I mentor on the Women's Engineering Society's Mentorloop scheme, as I am good at explaining what I do and am enthusiastic about promoting engineering to young people. I have recently started up a blog to try and help raise the profile of female engineers (www.thefemaleengineer.com), hopefully shedding more light on what being an engineer in our society actually looks like. Trainer hits some of my key qualities such as digesting complex information and delivering it to people so they can understand it, plus being creative in how to share the information. I am confident producing and delivering presentations and I am passionate about sharing knowledge. This is something that I am building on with my blog, but I also use this in my daily role in various contexts. I have driven procedure improvements at JCB, which then has required me to train up the users on the new process and ensure they are able to improve themselves. I am a good listener and very organised, which is important at JCB when I am often juggling multiple engine tests at the same time."
What do I do?
"My main role is planning, running and reporting on diesel engine testing, which we complete in test cells on dynamometers running the engine as it will be run when it is in a machine. I develop a test plan which meets all of the stakeholders' criteria and then ensure this plan is followed. This is done by ensuring all special equipment, parts or instrumentation is available and correctly installed, provide daily instructions to the test cell technicians to carry the required work out, analyse the data that is collected and produce a technical report detailing my findings and recommendations. These documents are used to feed into signing a new product off, closing out a problem or developing a new component.I enjoy being in a fast paced, innovative research and development department, which means that every day is different. I have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects and with people from different teams, and I manage my daily workload which means I am responsible for making sure I deliver everything that is required of me on time. The starting salary for my role is £30,000 for a new graduate, which will then increase significantly as you gain experience and knowledge through promotions, secondments and continual professional development (supporting STEM events as an example)."
How did I get here?
"Whilst completing my A Levels I started working as a trainee motorcycle mechanic at a Ducati dealership part time. Once I finished my A Levels I started working full time as a mechanic, gaining qualifications through training courses at Ducati HQ in Bologna, Italy. After 2 years I left to join a race team competing in the British Superbike Championship, where I worked for three teams over a five year period. One year I was a full time mechanic which meant preparing the bikes in between race meetings and working on customer race/track bikes, but the rest of the seasons I was just working for the teams over the course of the race weekends. Whilst I was doing this I worked full time at a motorcycle parts shop, and then moved back into working at a motorcycle dealership as a full time motorcycle mechanic. Here I gained my MOT tester qualification and various Yamaha qualifications from their UK HQ. In 2015 I joined JCB as a higher apprentice engineer, where I worked within the engine development team. Over the course of my three year apprenticeship I gained my Foundation Degree, NVQ and Bachelor's Degree along with invaluable work experience and placements in other parts of JCB. This led me to having a full time job offer from the engine development team where I have been for the last 2 years. During my apprenticeship I studied at university one day a week whilst working full time which was pretty crazy at times but I definitely think apprenticeships are the way forward for getting into engineering.I was inspired from a young age by attending a primary school which had a brilliant design and technology department, and I was building catapults, sail boats and robots from a very young age. I was brought up within a family of motorsport heritage which meant I was exposed to motorcycles and racing throughout my childhood. "
The life I live
"I am a petrolhead, general fitness enthusiast and NFL fan so the majority of my free time is split between those three categories! I have ridden motorcycles for 11 years and enjoy maintaining and modifying my bikes alongside going out for rides across the beautiful English countryside. I love watching Moto GP (and other motorsport) and I am a Las Vegas Raiders NFL fan, so I only really use my TV for watching sport! I also love music and spend a lot of time at gigs and festivals, listening to my vinyl collection or playing electric guitar. I am passionate about the outdoors and adventuring, so I spend a lot of my time out hiking, trail running and/or camping in my van. Exploring new places is one of my favourite things to do, and I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time in North America and around Europe over the last few years. I used to play American Football and Roller Derby, but unfortunately both sports have taken too much from my body over the years so I have had to retire...at least for the time being! I enjoy weightlifting, spin classes and mountain biking which are my main activities for keeping fit these days. "
My typical day
"A typical day for me will consist of a blend of attending/hosting meetings, replying to emails, carrying out data analysis, writing work instructions for the technicians, writing technical reports and signing off engine installations. Some days I will spend the whole day doing one of those activities, but then others I will do all of them and try to juggle my responsibilities. It is important that I manage my workload in order to deliver whichever activity is the current priority, for example if there is a problem or an upcoming milestone we have to hit then my focus will have to be on whatever is required from me to deliver that particular outcome. My role is a mixture of hands on and computer based work, but I do spend the most time on my computer as a whole."
My qualifications
"AS Levels Completed: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, French, General Studies, ICTA Levels Completed: Maths, Further Maths, PhysicsFoundation Degree in Integrated EngineeringNVQ Level 4 Extended Diploma in Engineering ManufactureBachelor of Mechanical Engineering"
