About Jo...

Who am I?

"These personality types match me really well. I love to investigate to learn all I can about a need or problem, and really get a great understanding of the big picture from different perspectives. From there it is so satisfying to be able to express what's needed, bring others on board, and develop solutions that best fit the need."

What do I do?

"Right now I am leading AVEVA's Diversity and Inclusion programme, and working hard to make tech and engineering careers more inclusive and attractive for everyone regardless of gender, race or background. My background is actually as an engineer, and I've been in Research and Development roles for most of my career up until now (a rather scarily large number of years). In my engineering career I was a Product Manager, which meant I was responsible to understand the customers' needs, and work with software engineers, testers, marketing, sales and others to develop software products that meet their complex engineering needs. I really loved it, and still do. More recently, I've become especially fascinated with how people work and the astonishing engineering that we can achieve by working together. That's led me to change path into this very people-centric role, and I apply very similar skills and evidence-based practice to how I go about my Diversity and Inclusion role. I believe that we do our best work when we bring together diverse perspectives and skills, so that's become my focus!"

How did I get here?

"I really loved science at school, particularly Physics and Maths, so I went on to study Physics at university. I also loved computers, so took as many computer science options as I could. In one course, we had to make a simulation of galaxies colliding, and visualise what happened to them. I honestly think that is the project that set me on my career path. I was just enthralled by being able to simlulate something using software that could never be tested in real life. After that, I chose a simulation project for my MSci and went on to get a job in an aerospace firm in their simulation department. That led me on to a few different roles writing software for other engineering applications. I realised, though, that I am very much a big-picture person. While I enjoyed the craft of writing software, you can get focussed to very fine details, and that took me away from the more holistic problem solving I was interested in. I wanted to get closer to the customers, their reasons for needing the software, and the decisions about how best to meet those needs. Product Management is a role doing just that, so I was delighted to find an opportunity to work as a Product Manager in AVEVA.Most recently, my interest has evolved further towards how individuals and teams can work best, and what organisations can do to ensure we create the best conditions for that. I've retrained by taking a Masters degree in Organisational Psychology. As a former Physicist, I was pleasantly surprised by how scientific this actually is! Now I make use of insights based in Organisational Psychology, and the analytical and softer skills I've learned, to build a more inclusive culture for everyone at work."

The life I live

"In my spare time, my creative side really gets to come out. I have two kids, and we build lots of elaborate cardboard contraptions together! I also love to sing, and sing in two choirs. "

My typical day

"My typical day involves all kinds of different things, and I love that about my job! I talk to people in all kinds of roles around our business to understand topics from their perspectives, and work together on finding ways to make improvements. My work also involves a lot of reading to keep current with rapidly evolving best practices and research, and developing analytics to understand our own organisation better."

My qualifications

"A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and ArtMSci PhysicsMSc Organisational and Business PsychologyI have to say, I don't think I've ever met anyone else with quite this set of qualifications! They've been great for getting me where I am, but they certainly aren't the only way to do it."
