About Hannah...
Who am I?
"My closest matched personality types were Developer, Manager and Quality Controller - these matched up my tendency to want to lead and my incessant need to make constant improvements to the way things are done. "
What do I do?
"Cyber security is becoming an increasingly important topic for all organisations - with stories of hacking and big data breaches appearing in the news on a weekly basis. Over 90% of these breaches are caused by human error, so it's my role to ensure that all of my colleagues know how to stay safe online and properly protect our customers' information. "
How did I get here?
"I went to university when I was 18 to study Ancient History, however after one year at university I decided it wasn't for me and I decided to enter the world of work. I went into a role as a Recruitment Consultant and worked in this industry for 4 years, before someone I'd previously worked with recommended me for a sales position in a cyber security training company. When I started in that role I fell in love with cyber security and because I was working for a training company I was lucky enough to be able to take advantage of their training courses! After a few years I decided to take the leap into a large organisation and become part of an information security team - something that I have loved. Cyber security is such an exciting field to work in. You're constantly pushed to learn new things and to keep one step ahead of the bad guys who are trying to steal information from your organisation. No one day is the same, which makes this a field I would like to work in for a very long time..."
The life I live
"In my spare time I enjoy running and listening to podcasts (often at the same time). I think it's really important to have something to focus on outside of work, otherwise I find it difficult to \"switch off\" and forget about what's going on in the office. I've made an effort over the past year to sign up for running races, which has forced me to leave the office on time each day, so that I can fit in some training. As important as it is to work hard, it's also important to have a good work/life balance and to have things you enjoy doing!"
My typical day
"Each day is very different in my role - which is something I really love about it. Some of the typical tasks I carry out include; creating training for colleagues (this could be online learning modules, step-by-step guides or presentations) and delivering face-to-face training about how to stay safe online. I also look at the sorts of cyber attacks we are currently seeing and I try to work out if there's a way we can reduce the risk of our organisation becoming a victim, by training our colleagues to spot suspicious activity and report it to our information security team. When our colleagues have the knowledge they need, they can help to protect the whole organisation from cyber attacks."
My qualifications
"I have 3 A-Levels in Maths, Physics and English Literature. I did go to university to study Ancient History, but decided to leave after one year and start working.Since working in information security, I have been awarded a GSEC (which is a cyber security qualification) and I recently passed my ISO 27001 Lead Implementer exam."
