About Rachel...

Who am I?

"I am a chartered civil engineer and my specialism in this field is bridges. The aim of my job is to ensure that all the company's bridges are designed, maintained and used in a safe manner. I work with Power Stations and I have to explain technical issues to them in a way they will understand and help them plan inspections and repair works, these are skills that closely match those of an Influencer and Quality Controller. I am also line manager and mentor junior engineers and support their professional development towards chartership which matches the personality types of a Manager. "

What do I do?

"I am a chartered civil engineer and my specialism in this field is bridges. The aim of my job is to ensure that the company's bridges are designed, maintained and used in a safe manner. Most of my job involves problem solving where I do research, numerical analysis and practical thinking to come up with solutions. No two problems are ever the same and it takes teamwork to deliver the final solution. I love working with different people and the variety of tasks. My job requires me to work both in an office and outside on site with I love too."

How did I get here?

"My favourite subjects at school were Maths, Physics, Art, Technology and PE. I initially studied Accounting at university but switched to Structural and Architectural Engineering which I found more interesting and used more of the elements I had enjoyed from Physics, Art and Technology at school. I love that the principles of engineering are the same everywhere which means I can work as an engineer anywhere in the world. "

The life I live

"I love being active and being outside. I like to go on holiday and travel to difference places. "

My typical day

"Most of my job involves problem solving where I do research, numerical analysis and practical thinking to come up with solutions. I spend most of my time in the office at my computer replying to emails or on the phone planning and coordinating tasks. I also regularly have to visit the different power stations to inspect the bridges to better understand any problems."
