About Lily...

Who am I?

"Hi I'm Lily "

What do I do?

"I work for BT as a Transformation Specialist in BT's Network Operations Centre. I love that the work I do is so varied, each day is different working on various projects aiming to improve and transform how BT's network is monitored, upgraded and maintained to keep everyone connected all around the world. The starting salary for the Technology Graduate Scheme at BT is £30,500 a year."

How did I get here?

"I have always loved learning and been really curious about the world around me. Wanting to know how things work and why things happen led me to want to study science at school. I also always really liked puzzles, as a kid I loved puzzle books and working out solutions to problems. This led me to study the sciences and maths at A Level and I then went on to study physics at university.Throughout my time at university I volunteered as a science communicator at We The Curious, science centre in Bristol. My passion for science communication was born leading to me working at a number of science events and festivals and subsequently as a STEM communicator at an EdTech company creating and developing educational resources for young people. My love of technology and the desire to work at the forefront of innovation led me to apply to be part of the Technology Graduate Scheme at BT. I was successful and am loving my work, I have learnt so much about the technology behind telecommunications and about how BT's broadband and mobile network keep everyone connected across the UK and the worldwide."

The life I live

"I enjoy sports, especially hockey, netball and running. I spend my spare time reading, singing and crafting. I also love to travel and I hope to visit every capital city in Europe!"

My typical day

"I work Monday - Friday, roughly 8.30am-5pm. I work in the Transformation Team which is made up of my line manager, 5 other transformation specialists, 1 technology graduate and 5 network and software apprentices.A typical day starts with the daily morning meeting where the leadership team within Network Operations reviews all the major network incidents that have happened in the previous 24 hours. Then we have a team huddle where out line manager briefs us on any updates and news we might need to know and then we share our project progress and any issues we face with the rest of the team to see if we can help each other. Then I work on my projects, which range from developing code to automate the diagnosis of alarms from equipment in the network to working with an external company to improve the onboarding experience for new joiners to Network Operations."

My qualifications

"I studied Physics, Maths, Further Maths at A Level (Chemistry at AS Level). Choosing what A Levels I wanted to do was really difficult but I had a brilliant Maths teacher who encouraged me to study the sciences and at the last minute even convinced me to take Further Maths!I loved the breath and variety of things I could learn about in Physics and decided to study it at university. I secured a place to study Physics at the University of Bristol and a few years later achieved a 2:1 Bachelor of Sciences degree.During university I looked into all sorts of career options in particular I was interested in Intellectual Property and becoming a Patent Attorney and in Science Communication and potentially becoming a teacher. I did lots of job hunting and secured a job as a STEM communicator at a start up company creating online Science and Maths resources for young people. I loved the job, working with kids of all ages, online and in person was so much fun and being able to create really innovative and creative products was really rewarding. This pushed me to pursue a career in the tech industry at the forefront of innovation, where I could expand my technical skills and knowledge . This led me to apply for the Technology Graduate Scheme at BT and now I am living out that wish and working in a transformation team pushing the boundaries of what is possible every day."
