About Stephanie...

Who am I?

"These personality types certainly suit a PR and Marketing role. Those working in the industry need to think outside the box, be driven to make changes, work independently and encourage colleagues into action. The PR industry is very competitive, especially when working in specialised sectors like Maritime, so confidence and the ability to understand every aspect of the business is needed. "

What do I do?

"My work can be divided into several segments: media management (sourcing and writing news stories and ensuring they are published in the right place); digital management (keeping our social media channels and website up-to-date); conferences and exhibitions (ensuring we are at the right conferences/exhibitions with good stands and displays); developing marketing materials (including filming, photography, writing brochures) and stakeholder engagement (working with our sponsored charities and other partners). One of the biggest projects I am working on at the moment is organising the 2020 British Ports Association Conference, which will be held in Aberdeen in October. "

How did I get here?

"I was fortunate enough to be offered my internship with a PR Consultancy at the end of my final year at university. The company was willing to fund my Masters in Journalism, and I worked for them for four years following the course. Very few people are given opportunities like that, so I was enormously grateful. Aberdeen is a fascinating city to work in and starting my career in a PR Consultancy was a great way to understand businesses of all shapes and sizes. Now, working for Aberdeen Harbour, it is a privilege to be involved in operations which have an impact on the prosperity of the whole region. Aberdonians hold the Harbour very close to their hearts, as the port is in the city centre, so I am very proud to work here."

The life I live

"I am a self-confessed bookworm, and my excuse for reading so much is that it helps me with my work! Being able to write well is a vital part of working in the PR industry, so reading a broad range of material really helps with writing and language skills. As well as fiction, I read biographies, magazines (the New Yorker is my favourite), newspapers and blogs. I am determined to write my own book one day, and I also really enjoy cooking after a busy day at the office!"

My typical day

"No two days are the same, as a lot of the projects I work on have short lead-in times. There is usually a lot of email traffic to deal with, which naturally leads to further projects. Although my role is based in our main office, I am out on the quaysides, on our pilot boats or at our expansion construction site nearly every day. I love getting out round the Harbour and speaking to all of the people involved in our different operations."

My qualifications

"Masters in Journalism from the Robert Gordon University (2013)BA Hons in History from the University of Aberdeen (2012)My Master’s in Journalism was followed by a two-year paid internship with a PR Consultancy in Aberdeen. This turned out to be a four-year, full-time job, during which I consulted for a number of energy-related organisations. An in-house secondment led to the role of Communications Manager with an international engineering group firm. This then led to taking the opportunity with Aberdeen Harbour Board as Communications Manager in 2018. "
