About Teresa...

Who am I?

"My Developer is great for solving problems. With my job we don't have time to waste so fast thinking and keeping our cool is a key part of being a firefighter. My Explorer is good as we have to listen to each other and work as part of a team to help saves others. My Investigator helps with working as a team and problem solving. "

What do I do?

"Every day is different which I like. Our main job is aircraft firefighting so we get to see all different types of jets/planes/helicopters. We get to travel a lot and see different parts of the world. That was one of the main reasons I joined - to travel and meet new people. I also play a lot of sport . The military is great for sport and supporting your hobbies. I spend a lot of time off work playing sports and get to go to some amazing places. "

How did I get here?

"I left college at 16 and joined the Army as a driver. After 4 years I wanted to see what the world had to offer so I left and became a fitness instructor/life guard. I also pursued my dream of representing my country at my chosen sport - 9 world championships later and 1 silver medal! I wasn't getting any younger and needed another dream.Firefighting it was and with the great opportunity the military provided me in my younger years there was no doubt in my mind that the RAF was the best place for me to do that. A few trips to the careers office, tests and interviews and I was accepted. First is the military training 16 weeks then onto trade training in your chosen field (firefighting). 12 years later and I'm still enjoying it. I've been overseas 6 times and have had the opportunity to continue with my sport. "

The life I live

"I play ice hockey. I like swimming and learning new things. I am married with a little boy, so most of my time off is spent with my family. Don't let being a mother and wife get in the way of your dreams. You really can have it all. "

My typical day

"A typical day would be sorting out our daily jobs - anything from checking the vehicles, aircraft familiarisation, fire safety briefs, extinguisher maintenance. Depending on what training we have to do for the month, we could be crawling though cages, putting out aircraft fires or cutting up cars. Every month is different which keeps the job interesting!"

My qualifications

"When i joined we needed A - C grades in maths and English. There are plenty of opportunities once you join to further your knowledge. The military have great educational programme where they pay for courses and even degrees!"
