About Katie...

Who am I?

"My results are coach, quality controller and trainer. As a medical statistician, I definitely agree with these!Coach - In my role, I often work with a wide range of medical professionals (doctors of different medical backgrounds, nurses, midwives, paramedics, researchers etc). This means I have to be good at talking to a wide range of people, approachable and friendly. But also, people need to be able to trust me to carry out good research/statistical practice. Quality controller - As a Medical Statistician, it is my role to conduct statistical research to advance medical knowledge. Every new medicine or treatment that is created must be investigated to prove it is not only effective, but most importantly that it is safe! As part of my research, I'm interested in the methodology behind the statistics we use and implement, and believe we should always strive to improve and build our knowledge base. Trainer - I'm a strong believer that knowledge is power, and that we should always talk and share knowledge in this industry. I enjoy helping others, talking through problems I've encountered and hearing how others may have approached it! "

What do I do?

"Life as a Medical Statistician/Biostatistician can be so varied and I think it's safe to say every single one of my colleagues work on and are interested in different things. But for me, I do a lot of research design for doctors/medical professionals that are interested in running clinical trials. This is super important because I feel that I can help ensure that the trial is meaningful and safe. My research interests mainly lie in women's health/gynaecology and reproductive medicine. Day-to-day I help analyse data (which involves a lot of coding usually which I love!) and write academic papers. What I enjoy most about my job i the feeling that I'm really making a difference to the world of medical research. I also love learning new things and solving problems. Although sometimes I feel that I'll always have something to learn - which can be quite daunting at times!"

How did I get here?

"There have been a few people, along the way, who have played a role in influencing my choice to be a Medical Statistician. I would probably say the first real influence was from my form tutor/maths teacher at high school, Nick. I remember one day I told Nick that I was going to go to University and study History (which was, looking back, a horrendous idea, considering my A-Level grade...). He basically told me that I should really consider doing Maths because I was good at it! I really struggled with my confidence in my abilities in high school, and hearing Nick say that was such a boost that I decided to listen to him, and here I am. So thanks Nick!Whilst studying maths at university I took a module in Medical Statistics, I really enjoyed it, but I felt that after university I needed some time. So I took a year out, worked a few temp jobs (mainly office and catering work) and travelled. During this year out I started to realise that I wanted a job that made me feel like I was making the world a better place (even just a little bit)! So i decided to go and do a Masters in Medical Statistics. My first job was within the NHS, and during that time I made some great connections within the University of Manchester. My now-boss became somewhat of a mentor to me, and eventually I got a job with him. He was another big influence, as his belief in my abilities pushed me in the right direction.I don't believe in the saying \"it's not what you know, it's who you know\" - for me, I think it was a bit of both."

The life I live

"I love to cook! I'm a big fan of making food from scratch and can be found spending most of my Sundays doing just that. I also love to read, listen to music and spend a lot of time out and about with my partner and friends."

My typical day

"A typical job for me definitely varies a lot, due to the nature of my work. "
