Leaders are built to challenge the system.
About Mara...
Who am I?
"My personality types are coach, influencer, and quality controller. I believe these results depict who I am today, but also who I would like to be later in my career. I currently am a Doctoral Researcher and that role requires a versatile individual who can lead at times, but is happy to be a team player. It also requires an open mind to be able to work with a variety of people. I believe this is where my results coach and influencer help me to be successful. I am also good with detail, and I am willing to challenge the way things have been done, which are qualities of a quality controller. I believe that to be in any line of research you must be willing to challenge the way things have been done. All three results have an element of leadership. In my later career I hope to develop the skills and knowledge it takes to be a leader in my field. What I believe sums up who I am and what I believe is a quote from my mother “Leaders are built to challenge the system.”"
What do I do?
"As a doctoral researcher you are required to complete 3 research studies during your time at the university. I am currently in my first year working on my first study. My research interests are in rehabilitation after stroke, and I hope one day that my research efforts make an impact on individuals affected by stroke. "
How did I get here?
"I am from the States, and I originally completed my bachelor’s degree in Biology. I thought I would eventually go to medical school. That is before a mentor introduced me into the world of research. I was given the opportunity to participate in multiple research projects and even to present at a national conference. I knew I wanted to continue doing research throughout my career. I also played soccer for my university and have a passion for sports. Combined, these led me to Brunel University. Programs here allowed me to combine my passion for sports and my love of research. I completed my Master’s degree in Sport Health and Exercise Science and moved on to begin my PhD in human performance and rehabilitation. "
The life I live
"In my spare time I love to spend time with my dog. I also love to explore and travel, and I believe studying in London has given me the opportunity to do this. "
My typical day
"It is hard to describe a typical day in the life of a doctoral student. I can say as a doctoral student it is independent research, but you need a team of people there to support you in your growth. Much of my day at the minute is preparing for data collection for my first study. This includes applying for ethical approval, testing equipment, creating protocols, and receiving help from experienced researchers. "
My qualifications
"Bachelor's from University of West Alabama Master's from Brunel University London"
