Student Voice Manager at Union of Brunel Students
I live by the words of Terry Pratchett “Sometimes it's better to light a flamethrower than curse the darkness.” Always ask why we doing things a certain way, and never be afraid to suggest changes to make things better.
About Rebecca...
Who am I?
"I lead the Student Union's Voice department which covers student representation, elections, campaigns and democratic processes. The democracy side involves being able to understand and follow clear regulations and laws, not to mention rewriting some of those regulations on an annual basis. I also have the responsibility for ensuring other students and members of staff understand the rules and regulations, so being able to explain complicated processes in an understandable way is important in my role. I enjoy learning how things work and as such I am constantly learning from other staff members in order to give me new skills and knowledge I can use in my role. As a result I have become a large repository of information on how to do many tasks in the organization, and have become a go to person for all new staff members. I enjoy teaching staff members to do things for themselves, by first showing and then aiding them to complete certain tasks. I'm also a very straight forward person and have been known to be fairly with people. If I have a question or a concern I will raise it and ensure I am communicating in a clear way. "
What do I do?
"My role is a very unusual one, and takes many different forms throughout the charity sector. My main tasks are to ensure the democracy of the Union is working effectively, this is through recruitment and support of volunteers and through ensuring we are following the governing documents of the organization. My job is multifaceted, I run events, support campaigns, service meetings, provide expert advise, deliver training, manage and support staff, maintain the digital membership system and support students to influence the union."
How did I get here?
"I started volunteering in my college Students Union when I was 16, and became an elected Officer. I then went on to be a paid Sabbatical Officer of that Union when I was 18. Following this experience I decided that I wanted to go to University to study politics and sociology, and became the first person in my family to go to university. During my time at uni I got involved in my Students Union, and was a voluntary elected Officer for a period of time. I also did a few odd jobs on the side for Sheffield College Students Union, as well as the usual student job working in a hotel doing bar work and banqueting. After uni I sought out jobs working as a Student Representation Coordinator in Students Unions' and went on to work for Middlesex SU. During my time there I also got heavily involved in Trade Unions and learn about employment law.Eventually I moved to the Union of Brunel Students as a Democracy and Representation Coordinator with responsibility for 1 part-time member of staff and a number of student staff members. Over time I've grown and reorganized my department and created the role of Student Voice Manager that I now hold. We now have 2 full-time staff and a Part-time intern post in the department."
The life I live
"I'm working really hard to improve my personal fitness at the moment so at least 3 evenings a week are spent in the gym. Apart from that I love my sofa, either watching anime, Netflix or reading sci-fi books. I have 3 cats who I adore and are the center of my world, no one gets very far into a conversation with me without my cats making it into the conversation."
My typical day
"I spent a significant amount of my day talking to people and helping to resolve issues that have appeared out of no where. Supporting my staff team to excel at what they do also takes up a lot of time. In addition I have projects to work on that involve spending time at my computer or meeting with other people."
