Technology Adoption Consultant at Insight

"Don't put too much pressure on yourself but prepare yourself to keep learning new things everyday. Don't be ashamed about being good at something, play to those strengths and don't waste lots of energy trying to 'fix' your weaknesses. Most importantly, If you don't like something, try and have the courage to do something about it..."

About Miranda...

Who am I?

"I think knowing your personaility type is really important because I'm a big believer in 'being yourself' in everything you do. Knowing your personality will help you understand what type of work and activitie will give you energy! The personality type matches 'are very me', I really enjoy meeting new people and I like to do presentations and influence others. I'm a pretty positive person too, which is what the \"Campaigner\" personality type is all about. I love to work with others and creatively solve problems together - that's the \"Coach\" in me! I enjoy being a \"Manager\" too; I'm fairly organised but I can easily adapt to changes and I don't let setbacks get me down. When you work as part of a team you can achieve more in less time! With the work I do, things are changing all of time and I get to plenty of opportunity to be persausive and work in a team, which is love!"

What do I do?

"When an IT services company encourages another business to buy computer software from them, it can cost the business a lot of money. Businesses choosing to spend thousands or millions of pounds on new technology can create a risk, what if the employees in the business choose not to use the new products?...all of that money would have been wasted. I help businesses make sure they get the benefits of their investment. I understand how to implement changes in businesses so I help the people in the business understand how the new technology will help them and I support them in learning how best to use it. 'Technology adoption' is the time taken between introducing a new product or service and when people start to use it as it was intended. My job is to make that time quicker.I enjoy the flexibiity most in my job. I am busy meeting new people and customers so I get the opportunity to travel. Thanks to mobile and cloud based technologies, I can do my job from anyway in the world (including from my house). The starting salary for business transformation type roles in the IT industry start from £30,000 per year."

How did I get here?

"I had always enjoyed being creative but when I graduated with a Photography degree I didn't know what I wanted to do next. I applied for lots of jobs and I didn't pay much attention to what the roles entitled. I had a telephone interview for an IT Helpdesk role and I surprised myself by answering the technical questions correctly and was invited to a face-to-face interview. Again, I surprised myself there when I was able to answer their questions and they offered me the job. I realised then that working with technology didn't mean I had to be really technical, I just needed to be able to think things through and act in a logical way.I was nervous when I started the job because I was to 'fix 62% of all IT issues on the first call' and I didn't think I could, however I got plenty of training and had access to a tool which works a bit like Google and gave me instructions to follow to resolve known problems. When I started that job I didn't expect that I would stay there long but within 1 month I was asked to join the \"Resource Management\" team. My new job was helping to train new members of staff, manage quality and provide coaching. I did that role for 6 months before telling my manager that I was ready for my next challenge - I wanted to lead a team.At that time, the company I worked for had won a new contract to provide IT support for a new customer. I lead the team who support that new customer. Then I went on to leading largest teams supporting more and more customers and then I managed the whole Service Desk! Following that, I become part of a small team improving the way we provided all IT services to our UK customers, meaning we could fix IT problems faster and cheaper. Then I helped the company make their Apprenticeship programme better and I managed a team of 40 new Apprentices develop their careers in IT. In my roles I have had to manage budgets and develop people.Professional social media platforms like LinkedIn are the best way to find jobs!"

The life I live

"In my spare time I enjoy doing things with my family. I also enjoy vintage clothes shopping, climbing, swimming and eating out at nice restaurants. "

My typical day

"In a typical day I will check my calendar on my work mobile to see where I need to be that day.I will spend some time either on my mobile or laptop responding to messages in Microsoft Teams.Throuhout the day I will attend calls about lots of different topics with multiple people at the same time using Skype or Microsoft Teams. It is likely that I will need to do a presentation to a customer or a supplier.I will probably have to write a communication plan for a group of customers and put together training materials as well.Every hour I will be working on something different and every day is different too!"
