About Emma...
Who am I?
"Persistent, with excellent attention to detail. Able to take complex information and relay it in simplified form."
What do I do?
"Teach University students (mainly) Biochemistry. The students are assessed on what I teach them and this contributes towards a BSc degree in Biomedical Sciences. I enjoy teaching and interacting with students, not just in lectures but in the lab environment and one-to-one in tutoring sessions.Starting salary is approx. £38 000."
How did I get here?
"I took A levels in Physics, Chemistry and Biology when I was 18 years old, but unfortunately didn't get the grades to attend University at that point. I then decided to postpone studying and trained & worked as a chef/diet cook. I have always been interested in Chemistry and Biochemistry, so after about 10 years working as a chef/diet cook I re-took my A levels at evening classes and was admitted into Brunel University to study for a BSc in Biochemistry. After I graduated, I was lucky enough to study for a PhD in Biochemical Engineering (at Brunel University) and then worked as a post-doctoral scientist (again at Brunel University) in the area of DNA damage/repair and how it relates to cancer treatment. When that employment contract expired I applied for the job of lecturer here at Brunel - my current role. "
The life I live
"I really enjoy sport, especially swimming, and would have liked to be a semi-professional sportswoman (except I wasn't quite good enough). However, I practised archery for about 10 years in my twenties, and then took up Tae Kwon-Do. I've managed to get to Second Dan Black Belt, and hope to grade for my Third Dan in about 6 months' time."
My typical day
"My working day starts with \"Administration\", which is mainly writing and replying to emails. In term-time, I may have a lecture or lab class to deliver. In the Autumn term I have final year project students that I either supervise in the lab, or meet with to discuss their project. I mark quite a lot of student coursework, project reports and exam scripts in both Autumn and Spring terms. I also set exam questions and write lectures.I am employed as an education lecturer, so I contribute to projects across the University to enhance learning and teaching. "
My qualifications
"A levels (Biology & Chemistry).BSc Applied Biochemistry.PhD \"Countercurrent Chromatography of Proteins using Aqueous Two-Phase Systems\".Fellow Higher Education Academy (a teaching qualification)."
