About Mhairi...
Who am I?
"I feel they match very well, under Coach it says good listener and friendly which I feel I am, I can also work with a wide range of people and have to implement this carry out my role as there are over 200 people within my organisation.Under the Influencer category it states good with detail, diplomatic and good and finding and reviewing information, all qualities which I like to think I possess.Under the Trainer category it states efficient and organised which I find I have to be as this role is so versatile."
What do I do?
"My role is mostly administration but very varied. As a Lighthouse Authority we manage all lighthouses and buoys in Scottish waters. My role is to prepare and update programmes in relation to buoyage, order stock to allow buoys to be built such as batteries and solar panels. I have to organise a crew change of 66 crew every 28 days, organise berthing for ships and carry out the role of the Port Facility Security Officer. We have many systems which require to be maintained and we also order stock for the stores to be sent to lighthouse and assist with the preparation of goods to be sent to lighthouses for storing trips and maintenance to take place."
How did I get here?
"I started as a Receptionist one day a week and was promoted to Operations Assistant after 9 months. Eighteen months later, this June I was promoted to Marine Operations Supervisor and I now line manage 2 other wonderful ladies and I love my job, it is equally challenging and rewarding. When I interviewed for my initial role with NLB one of the people who interviewed me stated that I was far too over qualified for the job. I said that I knew I was but I had been looking out for a job coming up for years and with any luck although I was starting at the lowest level I hoped to progress within the company and they have an excellent staff retention rate and are a really good company to work for. I’m very fortunate that I have manage to progress three grades in three years, I have already told my boss I’m coming for his job next, I like him though so I’ll wait until he retires. ;) If there is a company that you really want to work for keep checking for opportunities, I very much believe that everything happens how and when exactly as it is meant too. Good luck with all your endeavours! :)"
The life I live
"I have 3 children who are 19, 17 and 13 (4 if you included my husband, which I do!) I have 2 very lively Labradors, 2 cats who are not so lively but much more vocal and one tortoise who wanders about the house looking for dandelions to eat! We don’t have dandelions in the house I would like to add, he eventually stands at the back door waiting for someone to open it so he can wander into the garden! The bulk of my spare time is spent with my family and walking the dogs, I enjoy reading and going to exercise classes and am as partial to Netflix as the next person! "
My typical day
"I don’t really have a typical day although the bulk of it is admin related, it can range from berth bookings to accounts to creating a buoyage programme for the next year to updating systems. We often get staff coming in requested things on an ad-hoc basis so we are more often than not multi-tasking (usually many things at once!)."
My qualifications
"BA Business Management.I have also carried out many in house training course such as forklift driver and dangerous goods transportation."
