About Harri...

Who am I?

"I am a Consultant working in the real estate industry. I help clients with complex problems where I need to listen to them, understand their challenges and then work collaboratively with my team to help find a solution. Sometimes I need to bring in outside expertise, whilst managing the client relationship and expectations. Therefore I think the personality types suit me perfectly, I need to be able to understand the needs of others and enjoy making things better (Developer), I need to be able to influence people and think creatively about how to solve problems (innovator), and finally I need to be adaptable and understand how to get the best of those around me (manager). "

What do I do?

"My role puts me at the intersection of people and place. I need to understand businesses and their people to help my clients make decisions about their places. The main point for my job is understanding the Clients problems and them making sure that the work we do actually answers / solves the problem. This means that every day is different as it completely depends on the client. However, all of my clients problems will in some way relate back to real estate. The real estate industry is so interesting as it encompasses so many parts and is also all around us. Client challenges I have helped with before include: where in the world should we open a new office, what offices can I close, how do I save £x million each year through making changes to my properties, how are my employees working, what should my office look like if I want to attract new employees to the company. "

How did I get here?

"I always liked buildings and property. With no one in real estate to learn from or tell me about different paths I originally thought I wanted to be an architect. I studied a year of architecture and realised that I don’t want to be designing buildings but shaping decisions about all aspects of the built environment.I left and changed to Real Estate course at university which taught me a whole range of things such as the economics or real estate, design, development, investment, construction, valuation. It taught me how to answer the questions of how should it be built, what should it look like, where should it go, how much will it cost, what is it worth, why should it be there. I decided to train to become a Chartered Surveyor and started a graduate scheme post university with Cushman & Wakefield. This gave me the opportunity to rotate into different teams. My rotations included Healthcare Valuation, Development Consultancy and Occupier Consulting. After 2 years, graduates then sit a final assessment where the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) decides whether they are competent and can become a Chartered Surveyor. This assessment is called the APC (assessment of professional competence). I sat and passed my APC in October 2018, 2 years after graduating. I made the decision to stay in the consulting route as I really enjoy the variety and the problem solving. It is also all about understanding people, working out how that impacts real estate and then helping shape decisions which will have a tangible impact on peoples lives. "

The life I live

"In my spare time I set up a company called CREation Property Network. I set up CREation because property is an industry which relies heavily on meeting people and networking. I didn’t think there were enough opportunities for young people to meet other young people in the industry (for free) so I set up CREation to ensure that everyone, no matter their background has access to events and networking. In the year and a half since I set it up, our membership has grown to 1,300 members and we have run over 25 free events. This year I wont the Estates Gazette Rising Star Award 2019 jointly with my Co-founder of CREation, celebrating the hard work we put in to set up CREation Property Network. The award was given to me by Claudia Winkleman! To unwind I like to walk my dog (long haired sausage dog) and go rock climbing. "

My typical day

"Each day is very varied. In a nutshell, I spend a lot of day speaking to people (having coffee and replying to emails). Most of my work is project based so every few months / weeks I might work on something new which keeps it interesting. Depending on the project I could be meeting with clients, interviewing people, writing reports, developing strategy or delivering presentations / workshops. "

My qualifications

"Degree: BSc Real Estate Management (Oxford Brookes University)A Levels: Art, Maths, Geography, Spanish (AS Level)"
