Emelia Galkowska

Senior Technology Officer at BAE Systems

I am not an obvious engineer: I loved art and history at school (if you’d asked me aged 17 what I wanted to study at university, one of those would have been my answer) and I was never the type of person to say “I’ve always wanted to work in defence”. Yet almost 10 years, one physics degree and 4 cities later, I’m here working on some of the most interesting engineering projects in the country. Looking at those 10 years, I’ve realised I've always been driven by two things: intrigue and challenge. My advice would be to decide what drives you, and follow them.

About Emelia...

Who am I?

"My results were:Influencer - someone who explains things simply and thinks outside the box;Manager - someone who is motivated, open minded and is a team player;Innovator - someone who is confident, creative and strong willed. I was happily surprised by how well those qualities relate to both how I would describe myself and characteristics of my job: as part of the Technology Team I have to think creatively to start to answer questions like \"what sorts of technology do we want in 10, 20, 30 years time?\"; I have to be able to flick between conversations with academics, who are real experts in their areas, and engineers within the business, who want to know how that research is relevant to our products; and I have to be able to motivate and drive those conversations into something useful and interesting. "

What do I do?

"My role is all to do with future technology - new capabilities that could provide our solutions with the upper hand. My role is about finding the right people from within our business to work with the right experts (such as academics at Universities), to develop something new. The best part of it is having a really broad view of the capabilities, challenges and processes that go into putting a new aircraft in the sky, and being in a position to shape what those things might look like in the future. When I joined BAE Systems on the GDF in 2015 my salary was £28,000. "

How did I get here?

"I joined BAE Systems on their Graduate Development Framework - a 2 year scheme designed around 4 flexible placements. I took advantage of the ability to move every 6 months to experience as much of the business as possible - moving between sites, businesses and disciplines. I did a real mix of business, technology and engineering placements during this time. The following 2 years I deliberately chose a very niche role in engineering as part of the \"Electromagnetic Environmental Effects\" (EEE) team. The best analogy I can give for this is think of a time when you have received a text when your phone is next to the radio - you've probably heard the beeping/interference on the radio. This is mutual interference between the phone and the radio. The same thing happens between the systems on a Naval Ship and it was our responsibility to minimise it. There was also a major safety element to my role as EEE covers the hazard to people and materials posed by electromagnetic fields, as well as equipment. The absolute highlight of this role was being about to go out on Sea Trials with one of our new ships, ahead of delivery to the Royal Navy. Sea trials is a period of time at sea, in this case a week, testing that the ship did everything in real life it was designed to do 'on paper'. My new job as Senior Technology Officer in Air Sector is the polar opposite to EEE and is all about future capabilities, strategy and the 'big picture; looking for opportunities to develop these with partners and bringing them into the business. "

The life I live

"I love to Salsa Dance - it helps me build a social network every time I've move with work; it keeps me fit; but mostly I love to learn something creative and challenging, completely unrelated to work. I've also recently joined a Show Choir - I am not a \"singer\" by anyone's definition but I love a good musical and I'm really enjoying it!"

My typical day

"A lot of my working week is spent in the office, developing the technology themes of interest and building a network of key stakeholders within the business. We've recently started looking at the IP (Intellectual Property) landscapes around those themes so part of my time is analysing those results. I also get a lot of freedom to create and find opportunities to visit universities to learn about their research and discuss how we might use it within the business. "

My qualifications

"2009 - 2011 - Physics, Maths and Art for A-level (History and Critical Thinking for AS-Level).2011 -2015 - MSci Physics at the University of Birmingham 2015 - 2017 - BAE Systems Naval Ships - Graduate Framework 2017 - 2019 - BAE Systems Naval Ships - Electromagnetics Environmental Effects Lead Engineer2019 - Present - BAE Systems Air Sector - Senior Technology Officer"
