Daniela Cuba
Environmental Statistician at British Geological Survey
As a statistician, I get to play a part in a multitude of projects across most geological fields - so I'm never bored!
About Daniela...
Who am I?
What do I do?
"I am an Environmental Statistician. I spend most of my time analyzing data, designing experiments, and modelling all sorts of data and information! I get to go digging around in a pools of data to try to find useful information. I also get to use my math-y skills to predict the future, so no big deal. "
How did I get here?
"As a nature lover, it was always my goal to work in an environmental field. With this in mind, I started hunting around for a career within environmental research that would make use of my skills in mathematics. When I read the description for Environmental Statistician, I knew it was the job for me. The path to get to my dream job was a first degree in Applied Mathematics with applications in Biology, and a masters in Environmental Statistics. Between my undergrad and masters I worked as a research assistant at a Uni and now work full time as an Environmental Statistician at the British Geological Survey. "
The life I live
"As much as I love my job, I think it is important to retain interests outside of it in order to keep things fresh. One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is sewing. I am currently working towards having an entire \"Me-made\" wardrobe. I am also trying to get into sourdough baking but it's a bit hit or miss at the moment. Oh, and I also love going to walks in the country!"
My typical day
"My typical day starts quite early, as I am definitely a morning person. I wake up around 5:45am, and get ready to cycle to work. Once at work, I check my emails from the previous day and make a \"to do\" list for the day - items are usually \"make report for precipitation data\", \"read up on random vector models for groundwater project\", or \"fill up time sheets for the month\". While my day consists in trying to finish items on my list, I also spend quite a bit of time assisting people at work with their statistical questions. People come to me with coding questions, or simply for advice on what statistical techniques would be more appropriate. It can be hectic but it is overall very rewarding as I am both researcher and teacher!"
My qualifications
"BSc in Applied MathematicsMSc in Environmental StatisticsI also worked as a Research Assistant for a couple of months after graduating Uni to acquire some experience in research. "
