About Katie...

Who am I?

"I feel these personality types match me very well - and I can see them shape the work I do on a day to day basis. The investigator personality type is used a lot as a software engineer. There are often problems I need to research to find the best possible way to solve them.As a scrum master (team facilitator) I often use the manager personality type when keeping the team organised, making sure everyone is working on the correct items so we achieve our team goals. I also have to use the influencer personality type when there is something we need from other teams."

What do I do?

"I write code which is used in Engineering design software. Sometimes this is to add new features to the software and sometimes it is to fix problems in the software.I am also a scrum master which means I guide the team in best practices, ensure they are focusing on the correct tasks, remove any blockers and communicate with other teams on behalf of my team.I enjoy the variety of my job, they are days when I work independently to solve a problem and others I spend all day communicating with people across the business to ensure everyone is in agreement.I also really enjoy mentoring our new team members, it's create to see them learn and develop during their time with our team."

How did I get here?

"My favourite subject at school was Maths, so I decided to study that at university after finishing my A Levels. While studying for my degree in Maths I took a couple of computer programming modules, I had never tried programming before but really enjoyed it so looked for software graduate schemes when I graduated. In particular I looked for software engineering roles which would use Maths as well, and companies which weren't look specifically for computer science graduates. I started the grad scheme with AVEVA and did four 6 month rotations in different teams, so I could get an idea of what I wanted to work on. At the end of the two year scheme I returned to my first team as a software engineer."

The life I live

"My favourite hobby is photography, at the moment I only do digital photography and enjoy going for walks with my camera. My focus is on wildlife photography, but I also do some architecture and landscapes.I also enjoy watching films with my friends as well as baking bread and cakes. "

My typical day

"We start each day with a 15 minute meeting to discuss what we achieved yesterday, any problems holding us up and what we plan to do today. After that I spend about half my time looking at code, either working on my own tasks or mentoring newer developers in the team. The other half of my time is spent in my scrum master role, which means making sure the developers don't have anything blocking their work, replying to questions via email and attending meetings to represent my teams."

My qualifications

"A Level: Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and PsychologyAS Level: French, General Studies and Critical ThinkingDegree: BSc in Mathematics from University of Warwick"
