What do I do?
"I am an Associate in the Valuation and Advisory Services team and I carry out valuations of all kinds of commercial property from shops to offices and also industrial property such as factories and warehouses. Usually most of my clients are banks and the reports are used to help business owners to borrow money to reinvest or expand. I use different types of software to calculate values and I also have to look in detail at other sales and lettings to work out where a value should be. There is a lot of reviewing and analysing information, but this is combined with getting out and looking at different buildings and meeting different people. "
How did I get here?
"I did an English degree at university, and started doing admin roles just to earn some money once I finished. I moved to the North East to live with my boyfriend from university and got a full time admin job at UK Land Estates, a property company based on Team Valley in Gateshead. I loved the admin work I did which focused on property management and I found an online course with the College of Estate Management that meant I could train as a surveyor without taking time off work, and UK Land Estates agreed to fund this for me. After four years of working and studying, I passed my diploma, and in 2005 I sat my APC and passed, becoming a chartered surveyor. I then left UK Land Estates the following year, and joined Christie + Co and later Colliers International in a specialist valuation role, valuing healthcare properties. This specialist expertise and my time working at UK Land Estates meant that I could progress through to Associate level relatively quickly. In 2008 I left practice to become a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment in Northumbria University, and I worked here for 8 years, eventually progressing to Director of International Development and growing the student exchange programme in addition to being a lecturer. In 2016 I decided to head back into the professional world and went to work at RICS HQ in London as an Associate Director for the Valuation Professional Group. This lead me back into professional practice as a valuer with Colliers International again, and I joined Knight Frank as an Associate in October 2018. "
The life I live
"I am a mum of two, so that takes up most of my spare time, but I love the outdoors and so try and go hill walking and mountain biking as much as I can. "
My typical day
"A typical day would start with an inspection of either an office, retail or industrial building, walking around taking notes, measurements and photos. Then I would head back to the office in Newcastle and go through the information I have collected and start putting my report together. This could include drawing maps, carrying out web searches on planning permissions and speaking to colleagues and other surveying firms about anything similar that has sold or let recently. If I am working on a portfolio, I can be out of the office doing inspections for a full week and then pulling all the information together the following week, so every day in different. I also try and get out and meet potential new clients for coffees or lunch when I can, and my firm regularly hosts networking events to develop client relationships. "
