About Alex...

Who am I?

"My key personality types were coach, influencer and trainer. I think these personality traits match with both me and the work that I do - it is very important to work with a wide range of people to get the best outcome and the best design possible and the importance that the detail of the design has. I try to be as organised as possible and make sure I really listen to my colleagues to develop my understanding further."

What do I do?

"In my current role my main responsibility is to design improvements for existing systems which involves a good understanding of the standards and good Computer Aided Design skills to enable my design to come to life. I most enjoy being able to apply the knowledge I have learnt in the past to real life practical situations and the pride of having my name on my designs. "

How did I get here?

"I was inspired by early work experience at Airbus and this opened my eyes to Engineering as before this I did not consider it as a career option- I would encourage girls/women to take opportunities provided to them even its something you may not have thought about before as you never really know what interests you until you've had a chance to experience it."

The life I live

"Having moved to a different city to start my career I find it important to make connections as when I arrived I did not know anyone. Because of that I signed up for a choir (She Choir) and keep an active connection to my industry in my spare time by being involved in organisations such as WISE, being part of Women@Amey and also attending events held by Young Railway Professionals."

My typical day

"I spend time at my computer updating my designs to comments received and developing my knowledge through reviewing standards (which control the way in which we design). I really enjoy being able to design something from scratch and the feeling of accomplishment when the design is complete and has been approved."

My qualifications

"I completed 10 GCSEs Grade A-B, I then completed A levels in Biology, Physics and Maths before undertaking a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. I chose Mechanical Engineering as this gave me more choice in the fields I could apply this to and also suited my way of thinking."
