About Sarah...

Who am I?

"I like to understand how stuff works, luckily these are both things I do as part of my current job. Innovator - I am full of ideas (not all of them good, but hey!) and usually pretty creative, outside of work as well as in, and I'm definitely a doer, I like to see the practical application of ideas. I'm also good at looking at a problem from different angles to come up with an approach or solution"

What do I do?

"I partner with the Legal function at Unilever to review, select and implement technologies that help them in their day-to-day activities. This involves looking at technology solutions and assessing how they fit into both the Legal and wider Unilever technology landscape, re-using existing technology where possible and bringing in new innovative solutions where they add value to the business. I also research new and emerging technologies to work out how we could use them at Unilever to help us improve what we do or to venture into new areas. I love working with the business to find technologies that help them do their jobs better, I'm particularly interested in automating routine tasks so that my human colleagues can concentrate on the more complex and interesting work. I also love researching new technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and Chatbots, and thinking about how they could be applied in a practical sense to help us work better & achieve more. There are definitely opportunities for progression. As an Enterprise Architect, although you may have specialist areas, you also need a broad set of knowledge and skills and be able to develop business as well as technical knowledge to be able to select tech that supports business goals."

How did I get here?

"I had a female manager and CIO in previous jobs, who were both absolutely fantastic. They gave me opportunities that built my skills and confidence and made me realise that I was actually good at technology."

The life I live

"When I'm not studying I like travel, reading, knitting and walking my three dogs on the beach."

My typical day

"My working days vary quite a lot, I usually check my emails first thing, then I'll have meetings with my business partners to check progress on specific projects that we're working on. I may have vendor demonstrations to look at new solutions or be researching a specific type of technology. I am also continuously reviewing the legal technology strategy, looking at what we have, what we need and working on the roadmap of how to get us there."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A level: Maths (C), Physics (D), Sociology(E) Vocational qualification (Diploma, Certificate, BTEC, NQV4 or equivalent) Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) BSc Hons IT & Computing (First Class) Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) MSc Technology Management "
