Project Manager at Halliburton
Choosing STEM related subjects provides lots of opportunities to enter various industries where you can experience challenging environments. Make sure to talk to people in the industries you're considering to understand the day to day work and expectations. There are still lots of difficulties to overcome so having a resilient mindset will be beneficial; although the rewards of a STEM career are very worthwhile.
About Harley...
Who am I?
"I am quite an outgoing person and I enjoy building new relationships as noted in the Manager personality trait, which helps in the role I am in. As an Innovator, I find I am organised and practical which also has helped me to progress in the work I've completed so far."
What do I do?
"I am a Focal point for our customers. I listen and understand their requirements and build a plan to ensure successful execution and delivery of their projects. I enjoy meeting people and building relationships and being able to successfully deliver work under pressure. There are lots of development options. I've held 4 roles within my 5 years at the company with my most recent role being an international one; I am now based in Angola on a rotation! I've been completing this role since the start of the year and really enjoy all the challenges I've been able to face."
How did I get here?
"Whilst at school I had a teacher who was outgoing, creative and very encouraging and this helped me with my social ability from a young age. I have closely followed the career of Sheryl Sandberg who provides a lot of motivation as a female in business - her insights are inspiring and funny but also very relate-able.My engineering degree gave me a great platform to ensure i technically understood the application of Mechanical Engineering, and due to the location of my university I found my degree was really geared towards the Oil and Gas industry which helped me to transition into the workplace! I've been really fortunate that my company funded my further learning to allow me to achieve my Engineering Chartership. I worked really hard to achieve this and was awarded my Chartership in December 2018. I'm always looking to improve my knowledge and soft skills - I continue to attend training courses regularly to ensure I'm always learning and growing."
The life I live
"Sometimes my role can be demanding and to help with this I take time out to be active! Lots of swimming, gym and outdoor walks help! I also love to travel - every year I go on a city break with my friends to a different place and we take part in city tours and trying local cuisine. I spend a lot of my free time with family and friends. I have a list of new hobby's to try in 2019, these include golf, surfing and rock climbing!I'm part of a curling team - where I take part in weekly games and competitions from September to March. I've found curling to be a great way to meet new people of all ages and backgrounds... and it's a lot harder than it looks!"
My typical day
"I spend a lot of time talking to customers, this can be on the phone or via emails but I find the most effective communications are done in person! I try to meet the customers I work with every 1-2 weeks to discuss ongoing and upcoming projects. It's important for them to understand I am committed to delivering their projects safely and on time.I work with the engineers in my team to help better their understanding by sharing my knowledge and experience. To ensure I am always learning I spend time with my mentors and senior Engineers to keep up to date with new technology and changes happening in the business."
My qualifications
"Scottish Highers: Maths, Physics, Graphic Communication, Chemistry & Physical Education Bachelors with Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering.Masters of Science Modules: Materials and Corrosion Science Subsea Pipeline and Riser Design.Engineering Chartership with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers"
