About Laura...

Who am I?

"I talk to a lot of people in my role and have to be able to explain my findings; this fits well with Trainer. The Explorer personality highlights my practical side and desire to understand why thing might go wrong. The Quality Controller fits me as I like detail and have to ensure the effluent from our treatment works meets its requirements. "

What do I do?

"As a Technical Advisor my role is to support the business to ensure the sewage treatment works are operating efficiently. I enjoy the variation of my job, one day I could be out on site in Northumberland and the next day in the office looking at data and writing reports. There are opportunities for progression as the job lays down foundations and allows development of transferable skills which could also allow for progression into other departments in the business. "

How did I get here?

"I completed a year in Industry during my 3rd year at University; this was with Northumbrian Water. I had never considered a career in the water industry and my year in industry allowed me to gain knwoledge and experience of the working world without committing to it as a carrer! I really enjoyed the variability of working in Northumbrian Water and after I graduated I got a perminent job here as a technical advisor. Without the transferable skills I gained from a science degree I would not have got the job. I continued to progress in my career, working as an advosr then in an operational team and I have recently become a team leader as well as a senior Technical Advisor. A colleague inspired me: we called her the guru as she appeared to know everything. She really helped me with my career and was someone to look up to."

The life I live

"I enjoy travelling, socialising with friends, going to the cinema and horse races."

My typical day

"I investigate problems on sewage treatment works, so, if a sewage treatment work isn't cleaning the sewage as well as it should be, I will visit the site. I may take samples across the treatment process to try and identify what is causing the problem. I will analyse data and speak to the operators running the plant. I may write a report of my findings and give recommendations of how to rectify the issue. I am also involved in assessing the capacity of sewage works to identify whether they will need to be upgraded in the future."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) GCSE-Double science award, English, Maths, PE, Geography, Graphic Design, French, History Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A level- Biology, Chemistry, Social Policy, General Studies, AS level- Maths Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) BSC-Applied Biology I am a Chartered Scientist "
