About Rae...

Who am I?

"No one personality type makes you a good lawyer, different personality types are needed to harness a wide range of skill sets. I'd say in construction & engineering there is a lot technical details and complex drawings you have to understand and you need to be able to have intelligent conversation with your client about the product or building they are creating. This requires curiosity as well as intelligence, so my Explorer could be helpful here. People skills are vital in interacting with a wide range of people in a big team, so perhaps my Coach personality helps in this. Information gathering (and quickly) is needed in fast moving deals and also being able to discuss with clients and others in clear way the complex issues that are at stake really is an advantage."

What do I do?

"I undertake both transactional and disputes work for a variety of private and public sector clients in Construction and Engineering . I work with people from all sectors, experiences and backgrounds and each brings something new to the table. The work is challenging both intellectually and practically. I can have a site visit to a construction site one day, travel to the other side of the country the next day and then be in the High Court in London. I like that it is a great mix of local, national and international work. There is an established promotion process and alternative routes that also offer flexibility. These are pretty standard for the legal industry. There is also the opportunity to move between private and public sector work or relocate nationally or internationally to rise through the ranks."

How did I get here?

"My mum, she is amazing. No challenge is too great. She always says don't knock it till you've tried it. She is curious about everything, likes people, trying new things and is not too afraid of taking a risk."

The life I live

"I love reading, mainly Jane Austen, but I have read the whole Harry Potter series and Twilight (prefer Potter). I love a good movie and my favourite is Pride and Prejudice (the one with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier) and Blind Side. I also like climbing but best of all I like travelling to new places and new cultures. Exploring a new city or village and walking round it is great. My favourite way to spend my time is with my family."

My typical day

"No two days are the same, it is a mix of conference calls, meetings, reviewing documents and analysing them to advise a client, drafting contracts, communication with the court and client and several cups of tea."
