Jessica Poole

Defence Engineering Graduate Trainee at Rolls-Royce

When I was little, I asked my mum what 'compromise' meant, and she said 'compromise is doing what you want, when you want to do it'. Of course, I know that's not the definition now, but what she said stayed with me and reminds me even now that when I'm put in a situation when I am told I need to compromise, I ask myself 'is the other person also compromising?'. This is applicable both at work and in relationships and I've come to realise that very often women are put in situations when they are made to feel guilty until they give up what they want to do to make way for other people. Don't give up!

About Jessica...

Who am I?

"I'm good at seeing things differently to other people, which is an Innovator personality trait. Sometimes, I'll come across a problem that no one has been able to fix and I'll say why don't you just do it this way? and it works! I'm also good at listening and communicating. I can really get to the bottom of a problem someone is having using my Explorer personality trait, then share with other people about how to fix it. My primary motivation has always been fairness, which is very much a Quality Controller personality trait. "

What do I do?

"My job is varied and really cool - in a nutshell, I get given puzzles and I solve them in different ways. This has ranged from everything to working out a new logistics process, which involved working out how to get lots of people to communicate with each other, to modelling engines on a computer and writing code and getting the computer to solve maths problems. I also do practical things, such as making brackets to fit two parts together, or having to assemble a test rig for navy ship parts. As part of a training course, a group of us got the chance to take apart a military aero engine and put it back together again as though it were Lego, which was brilliant. I also have to say I have a track record of getting way too over-excited when my computer code works and gives interesting answers! I'm currently in the process of applying to an extended development scheme, which gives the best graduates in the company extra training so that they are better equipped to be future leaders of the company. So I've found that I'm encouraged to progress very quickly if I work hard. I've been able to travel to lots of different places in the UK - particularly London, Derby and Oxford. In future, I'll likely be able to go abroad with work, as we have offices across the globe. Most likely, this will be the US or Germany."

How did I get here?

"When I was little I loved animals, and I wanted to be a vet. I got really upset when I found out about how global warming was destroying so many animals' habitats and this made me want to work in environmental science. At the same time, I was fascinated by how the world worked, from water boiling to how the brain functions. My mum has been an amazing role model for me: she was a single mum and has always told me never to compromise my belief or integrity. I've always had famous role models as well which have tended to change depending on what point I am in my life. For a long time, it was Marie Curie and Paul Dirac - two famous scientists. Now it's moved towards Temple Grandin and Elon Musk. The subject that kept my options most open was chemistry, which I studied at Oxford. I graduated and went on to work as an engineer for Rolls-Royce and now I want to change how we generate and use power, so that we can work towards a future of green energy and even solar powered planes! My primary motivation has always been fairness. I think as humans we need to be much more responsible for the world, how we use the resources and how we treat animals. I think we also need to look at how we view people in our society - so I'm trying to change lots of things I perceive to be unfair. "

The life I live

"I am a keen Ultimate Frisbee player, but generally I love being outside, so I also do a lot of walking and swimming. Otherwise, I read a lot of books - everything from fantasy to history and I write when I get time."

My typical day

"A typical day usually involves the unexpected. I'm currently working on a future programme, so it's a lot of assessing to see if we think an idea will work, despite being 20 years away from it actually being used. I'll often have meetings to talk through ideas and methods with people and then spend time coding theory into computer models. Often, I'll go over to the manufacturing building to talk to some of the engine assemblers and ask for advice, which means I often get to look at the engines. I love the variety and the amount I learn in everything I do. I've had to learn new coding languages from scratch, but also how an engine works and how to use manufacturing machines such as a mill and a lathe. Most importantly, I enjoy feeling like I'm helping to work towards an ultimate goal of making cleaner energy and revolutionising the aerospace and energy industries."

My qualifications

"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) Undergraduate degree (BSc, BA, etc.) Post-graduate degree (MSc, MA, etc.) Chemistry "
