About Sophie...
Who am I?
"I am a laboratory science apprentice at Barnard Castle. From the quiz about my personality types, I think coordinator fits with my job because I must be very logical and patient in the lab and also help co-workers. Trainer is also appropriate as I help others to learn and share knowledge, practical, theory and also promoting the apprenticeship to potential candidates. "
What do I do?
"I work in a stability and release lab, and check products to ensure they are fit for consumers/ patients. Every day there is new testing to be done. My department is specific to inhalation products, specifically the products Ventolin and Avamyst. Previously, I worked in the dermatologicals department, which involved the release testing on creams and ointments. I have had the chance to travel and meet new people from all over the world and be a part of an organisation that helps people. "
How did I get here?
"Previously I was a Petrol Station Attendant. I started my apprenticeship straight after completing my A Levels. I decided in my second year of A levels that I didn't want to go to university full time, so started looking for science based apprenticeships - very hard to come by in the north east!"
The life I live
"I love makeup, walking the dog and shopping."
My typical day
"On a typical day, I test many different products for various things, for example, I test the pH of a product, or whether the concentration of a component meets safety regulations (via chromatography, UV IDs…). All results must comply with specifications set by safety organisations in a country (think FDA for America...)"
My qualifications
"Secondary education (GCSE/O-Levels) Post secondary education (College, A-levels, NVQ3 or equivalent) A-Level Chemistry, Biology and German "
